Simple question. How do you get used to learning all the meanings a kanji can provide? Like 上がる could mean anything from to rise, to be entered, to be nervous, to be complete, to be promoted, etc. It might be more simple to associate the feeling of 上がる with "to reach a 'later' point (literally or metaphorically)", but not every kanji works that way.

What the fuck, I learned katakana literally 10 years ago from Wikipedia before anything else. It was easier for me to remember because I could apply it to English words constantly. It was harder to remember hiragana because I had nothing to reference other than the language itself. So much Japanese media uses katakana that it's interesting to look at トム・クルーズ and figure it out. It just becomes easy at some point. I will admit that ノーオナニー is a little weird to look at with all the horizontal strokes, along with the fact that オナニー isn't even an English word like you might expect.
