I've been studying Japanese for the best part of 9 years in school and at university. Granted, not always at the same rate, it's only been in the last 2 years that my studies have been a full-time occupation, but take it into account that studying Japanese has formed a major part of my life for 9 years.

I have dedicated a considerable amount of time to this, and I am still not proficient, let alone fluent. I am currently being taught by native speakers who do not expect me to be fluent even after 4 years of intensive study at university. That would only come after living and working in Japan for several years.

My school teachers who have been teaching Japanese for decades, and have lived and worked in Japan are fluent, but even then they are not perfect.

If I had been able to 'learn' Japanese from watching anime, why wouldn't they have suggested that I do that? I'll tell you why: because you can't.

Now I ask you, how proficient are you at Japanese? How good is your understanding of grammar? Can you tell me the functions of each particle in Japanese? Can you conjugate between the plain, polite, volitional, て-form, causative, and passive form on the fly? Can you read and write the estimated 4000 Kanji required for fluency and their associated compounds? Have spent any time practicing with native speakers and learnt from them the nuances and idioms of Japanese that one can only learn from a native speaker? Have you truly immersed yourself in Japanese culture and lived in the ambient soundscape of Japanese 24/7, something that can only be done by living Japan?

Or have you just spent a lot of time watching anime and not actually practiced or studied Japanese to any degree, and just convinced yourself that just because you can replicate phrases that you've heard, you can speak the language?

Learning any language takes time, a lot of time, dedication, blood, sweat, and an awful lot of tears. Saying you've learnt Japanese from watching anime means you're either a genius, or you're lying. Either way, it's very disrespectful to those of us who actually put considerable amounts of time and passion into learning a language.

Yes, watching media in another language can help, help, with learning said language. You can pick up the odd phrase here and there, maybe even the occasional piece of grammar. But that is not an effective substitute for formal, academic study of a language.

If you have truly learnt Japanese, prove it by replying to this comment with an appropriate length response (say, 200-400字?) in fluent, fully formed, written Japanese, with the appropriate use of Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. If you can do that, I will accept defeat (and yes, I can tell when something has been put through Google translate, so don't even try it).
