I have been learning my vocabulary with Anki (and writing new words down on paper once) for about 7 months now. Every day I learn 6 new words. I have the Core 6k deck which supplies me with a steady stream every day. If I find new words in the wild or in my grammar I add them to the deck should they not already be in there. Then I move them to the front so I get those words the next time I learn new ones.
I like this process and think it works pretty well for me.
The front of my cards have the Japanese word, the back the meaning and pronunciation in Kana. If I don't know both meaning and pronunciation I click again. There is also a practice/example sentence and an image on the back which are incidental. I don't do cards English to Japanese. This is how I learned English and that worked pretty well for me (basically learning a critical mass of vocab and grammar and then really learning the language with immersion).

I didn't actually think there was anything wrong with my learning until I saw how well some other people do. My mature cards hover around an 80% retention rate (young about 85%) which is fine I think as long as it doesn't dip further.
The actual thing I'm wondering is how people pull off huge number of reviews in such short amounts of time (+100s of reviews, +5 reviews per minute). I take about 25s per card on average. So 2-3 cards per minute. My review load is not that bad with about 40-50 reviews + learning and relearning cards which hover around 20 usually. Almost all my mistakes are knowing the meaning but getting the pronunciation wrong.

Am I actually slow or are some people just really fast? I know I'm not that great at strictly memorizing things, but am I doing something wrong?
I can't (or rather don't want to) spend more time learning Japanese and I'm happy with my progress, but if I could be more efficient I could learn more in the same amount of time.

One other thing I was wondering: Do you also take really long to learn new words? When I learn my 6 new words each day there are about 2-3 new Kanji and the longest time I spend just figuring out what the Kanji mean and why they are used (which does really help me). It does take like 5-10 minutes per Kanji though.

My favorite thing about wanikani is the fuzzy matching. You can have typos or make small mistakes and it'll be okay with it. Many tools like Anki just don't have this. My feeling with the typos is: I'm not here to learn English. If I understand the general feel/meaning its ok.

Anki is about repetition, not about being perfect on day one. If you got it right once, move the card to good. The only important part is to do it right once and instantly move on. If you review your cards it's not even uncommon to review over 100 cards in a minute. It simply comes down to how good you know them.

The more you learn the faster you become. Especially if you haven't even finished the 6k deck you are not even really starting. Also while it is true that learning a deck while at the same time using the words actively (for example by watching anime or playing a vn) is the most effective way, the 6k deck is so good that you will see those words a lot anyway.

Read the "How to create Anki cards" guide. Creating cards should never take more than a few seconds (the process is more or less automated).
