For someone new I'd recommend making foam pads yourself, since it's cheap and it lets you figure out what kind of shaping works for you.

Having said that, I use Roanyer silicone pads and don't have any intention of going back to foam. Silicone pads are expensive, but they feel nicer, make a nice sound when you slap them, and I find them easier to get in position. I'd recommend the Roanyer pads a lot, so long as you have the right shape for them. They only add a moderate amount to the hips/thighs, and basically give no butt padding at all. That's fine for me because I have a chubby arse anyway, but will be an issue for some.
