Hi, tourist from /tg/, not sure if this would be an appropriate place to ask.
I want to make a semihuman creature of Japanese origin for a setting and I'm wondering how to name the thing, hopefully in a genderless manner so I don't need to have two words. So rather than having something like "batman" and "batwoman", having something like "werebat".
I did a bit of research and it seems like both 狼人間 and 人狼 would be appropriate genderless epithets for werewolves, and I'm wondering if I could use the same formula for myself, and which would work best.
For example, would "dochiningen" (ドチ人間) or "hitodochi" (人ドチ) both work? Or should it be constructed some other way?

It depends on your goal but if your goal is to become good at Japanese as native speakers then it’s absolutely essential. Unfortunately though apparently it’s very difficult for non Koreans and maybe Chinese to learn pitch accent because I’ve never personally seen a non East Asian non native speaker person speak with a perfect pitch accent (and even for Koreans it’s difficult! I’ve seen my Korean friends who were good at Japanese struggle a lot). Even on TV or internet it’s extremely rare. So it would definitely take a lot of work, but people shouldn’t disregard it completely. It’s so important. There are lots of manzai skits and internet jokes that make fun of weird pitch accents, which says a lot about the importance of speaking in the correct pitch accent. People won’t make fun at your weird pitch accents because they’d easily see that you’re a learner, but the association between wrong pitch accent and it being funny is there. So do learn pitch accent. They’re important. The best way probably is to get a Japanese person who can teach it to you, be it teacher friend or tutor.

My question:In the Japanese learning community there is a debate going on if pitch accent or 高低アクセントactually matters. You're very fluent in both languages so your take on this would be very unique. Do foreigners who haven't studied pitch accent really sound that weird to japanese people? Is it like "oh they sound kinda foreign.. " or is it more like "I have to really focus to understand what this person is saying lol".

Joey's Answer:Absolutely. Pitch accent and intonation is SO important in japanese, and it takes you from sounding like you're "day 2 learning japanese" to "I am fluent". It honestly does and in my opionion, I personally am a firm believer that pitch accent is more important than vocabulary in my opinion. You can learn a million words in japanese, but if you're saying it all wrong and it doesn't communicate to the other person then what is the point of learning it. It's much better to learn 1 word and learn how to say it perfectly in a sentence, with the correct pitch accent, correct intonation and make it so that you can perfectly communicate that particular phrase to a japanese person and them going "of course, I know exactly what you mean". That is way more important in my opinion then having the dictionary of japanese words in your head. There's really no point. So yes, absolutely. I don't know why this is a debate in the japanese learning community. It shouldn't be a debate, because it is absolutely important and I find it a little bit annoying how a lot of japanese, I guess, teachers, don't accentuate and really enforce the importance of intonation and pitch accent, because it really does, it makes the difference between sounding like you are a foreigner to sounding like a japanese person, all right, and again, like, if you can't communicate words to a japanese person, if they have to be like "what did you say? I didn't quite catch that" then what's the point of learning all the words. There's no point.
