complete bullshit. knightly longswords were just as sharp as their eastern counterparts, and they'd break as easily on contact with plate armour. a knight would grab the sword by it's blade and use its tip (some italian masters actually sharpened only the top part of the sword, or left an unsharpened part in the middle, others just made sure they wore a good pair of gauntlets) like a short spear to thrust for gaps in the armour.

the most secure tactic was to grapple the opponent to the ground and use a dagger. both, samurai as well as knights knew this.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen.

Not really seeing as tactics are largely situational with whatever you've got at hand. armored samurai would not hack each other with swords, they will tuckle and wrestle the other down.

Japan was isolated for hundreds of years. Samurai fought other samurai. When they were invaded by the Mongolians in 1274, the samurai were so used to their ritual fighting styles, that when these "barbarians" broke the rules, the samurai got owned. The only reason Japan remained was because the Mongolians retreated, thinking "ohshit, this was TOO easy. They must have reinforcements!"

Then in 1281, the Mongolians came back. This time, a storm smashed most of the Mongolians before they made it to the mainland. The Japanese thought it was divine intervention, and managed to win through their supah advantage.

Medieval Europe had barbarian invasions, empires falling and rising, and countless cultures fighting. This would make knights the more adaptable warrior.

Realistically, the biggest advantage Samurai would have against the European nobility, is a big one:

They would outnumber the knights 10 to 1 no kidding. You would have to rally a serious number of European kingdoms' nobility together to match the sheer man-power of the Japanese nobility. Of course, most European armies by the time of OP's armor were professional non-noble armies, so I guess the comparison doesn't mean much.

It's pretty widely accepted that if France would have not surrended and accepted it was going to be another bloodbath, world war two would have resulted in a germany much more hard pressed. The troops left in the magniot line actually kept on fighting for three weeks before finally giving up due to no supplies after the surrender.

At least not in terms of the relative importance of the nobility compared to the commoner population. The samurai class had real political and social weight in Japan compared to the knights in Europe who dwindled in importance after the black death. About 15% of Japan were nobles by the Tokugawa shogunate, which is why they did such an affective job of gun-control (not very popular among the samurai).

knightly swords weren't heavier, slower or generally of lesser quality than katana, and katana are no long razorblades unfit for real combat. knights as well as samurai were professional warriors and their life depended on how well they were able to defend themselves on the battlefield and in duel situations, it would be silly to assume that either of them didn't have proper knowledge or techniques to defeat their opponents. i doubt the differences between weaponry and armour would be decisive, it'd depend on the individual skill.

I'm still betting on the knight. Knights spent all their time training, fighting, and fucking wenches (or at least the ones that weren't fat nobles pre-tending to be knights). While a Samurai might have more endurance (or not) it's likely the fight wouldn't last that long. Also keep in mind a good knight would be hella strong. They could swing their swords incredibly fast considering their weight. Maybe not as fast as the much lighter weight Katanna, but fast enough to catch a little Japanese Samurai. Grappling a guy twice your size and twice your strength while he's trying to kill you is harder than it sounds even with magical elven fighting arts.

In fact, French army would have been raped anyway, it was the riffle against panzer. Maginot line was made to be the last defence against Germany, that's why it lasted three weeks there. They just should have all escape to Britain. My great grandfather died during this part of the war, and since the poor fucker didn't die as a resistant it was like for nothing.

In defense of poor Japan and their crappy armor, they did make some really nice guns in the 16th Century. They definitely perfected the arquebus technology of the Portuguese. They also made a shit-load more of them than any European nation.

No what Japan in the 16th Century really has in its favour is sheer numbers, and provided a big of political cohesion, massive amounts of coordination and field-experience.

France also had just about the same technology in terms of Tanks as Germany at 1939, but during the 30's the French were vastly more concentrated on defensive tactics and paid little attention to armor. Also technology doesn't mean shit when you don't actualy build the weapons. They gave to their soldiers the same blue uniforms and bayonettes than during the first World War. I think you are talking about Briton, Neville Chamberlain. France were one of the most prepared, if the the most prepared out of all the world powers to tackle an attack from Germany.
