I don't know why people compare the two, because outside of both being prolific fantasy authors they have nothing in common. Nasu has never listed Tolkien as a large influence either. I think Nasu has no works without major damning flaws, while Tolkien is more consistent. Nasu is more emotionally resonant than Tolkien but also is terrible at melodrama and often doesn't understand the concept of subtlety. Then again, he's still relatively young. Tolkien finished LOTR when he was 50. Perhaps Nasu's peak is still ahead of him.

On the most broad level, it goes Sakura -> Rin -> Saber. It starts out with Ren fighting for his simple everyday life, but unlike HF where this gave Shirou his personal happiness and everyone lived happily ever after, everyone dies horribly due to their inadequacies and the antagonists laugh at them for simply passing their problems off to the next generation, then it uses this to setup a tale of transcendence, which Fate said was impossible. It's a statement on the correct way of approaching the driving conflict. There's lots of little details like the treatment of weapons, foils, all the birthing and so on. The whole thing is meta-commentary. Ren is not Shirou, but Masada reading FSN. If you read them both again you should see what I mean.

I'm reading HF now for the first time since I got into fate through fate/zero half a decade ago.
It's great, it's like it was made as a direct continuation. Shirou learns about Kiritsugu and Illyasviel from the get-go, Kirei plays a major role again, and Zouken finally appears.
You wouldn't believe how starved I was for this. The UBW anime was a major disappointment for me simply because Shirou was never confronted by Illya with their shared past.

She basically tries to ignore Noel until the scene at Roa's lair where Noel attacks Shiki and Ciel again instructs Noel to go home. Noel is furious that Ciel's developed feelings for Shiki though and was never really an emotionless killing machine. Noel has been partially driven in the years after the France incident by watching Ciel suffer. She can't cope to see Ciel show emotion and move on with her life because she (Noel) is still stuck in the past. This leads a downwards spiral for Noel and she becomes a victim of Arach, transformed into the thing she hates most. She's past the point of no return when she fights Ciel. Ciel is also a victim who really doesn't know how to repent. After the Noel fight Shiki tells her it's okay to be honest and say sorry which she was reluctant to say because she didn't consider herself to be forgivable, even if she wanted to do right.
I want to see Noel happy, but I think she was doomed when she became partners with Ciel. Ciel begrudgingly accepted because of her guilt, but it would have been kinder to decline, even if it would have made Noel hate her even more.
At least in Arc's route Noel presumably ends up in a monastery somewhere.
