Pixiv does have its share of shitty artists, but the good ones most often bookmark or link to other good artists. So you can just favorite the artists you like, the browse around his/her bookmarks for other artists, and never bother with the general uploads. And then you can just take a look in the favorites' upload section whenever you go to pixiv.

Plus, the website is simple and easy to navigate.

But after about 100games on tenhou, I can read all mahjong yaku and hand type.
Same with Touhou chars.
I can read Cirno, Reimu , Marisa and probably a few more touhou chars kanji/kana.

As a user of both, I can say this:

The average level of quality is about the same in both sites. On Pixiv you can find good pictures easier due to the tag system and the score ranking, while the search function on DA makes no fucking sense.

Still, western and sometimes even eastern artists are better of on DA, for a bunch of reasons:

DA now allows hotlinking of your works on any place while Pixiv still requires people to acess the website, register and login to view them;

DA's interface is more of a social network than just a gallery, which makes social bonding with other artists easier (even if a lot of people there suck), while on Pixiv people rarely comment on others' artpieces and everything there is reclusive and secretive;

As people pointed out, the art on DA is much more heterogenic than Pixiv. If you know where to look, you can find beautiful art that is not just about Touhou, anime and games, and artistic growth is about being exposed to different kinds of references.

If you're not an artist and signed up just to search for cool Touhou pics, you're better off not leaving Pixiv and the boorus, though.
