Also note that you can pirate books from libgen (so like, tae kim, 20/80, maybe even genki if you just like the school approach and artwork, but it's not really the ideal self learning book).
Anki is useful for kanji (it's ok to start right after learning kana), OK decks are:

Don't forget to put yomichan into chrome or firefox, so you can actually translate Japanese without knowing any Japanese vocab.
You can also try wakikana and bunpro instead of anki (if you only pick one, you would do bunpro) if you are a person who uses a phone a ton (and you WANT to pay a monthly subscription).
You can also make your own anki decks, and do so called "mining" (advanced).
Ideally the best way to learn is to apply what you have learned in reading, in listening, in writing, and in person communication.

I have started writing a daily journal on the things I want to improve upon, the idea is that a structured approach will help keep me focused in order to obtain my long term objectives. I write at the start of the day what my plans are for each category, and I write an entry at the end of the day stating what tasks I have accomplished. The hope is by making continuous daily progress I will achieve what I want within a limited timeframe. What I don't want to happen is half-heartedly do reps every now and then and never make any real progress so i'm trying this with faith that it will work.

if you're a european esl and you learn english, learning formal words isn't a big challenge because a lot of formal english words come from latin or greek, so as an esl you may already know them.
