The top down simultaneous turns format is what defines roguelikes for me.
Roguelike is the term that exists to describe games of this genre so it's the term I will continue to use in leu of a better one.
I wouldn't reccomend Elona to someone that enjoys Dragon Quest, and I also wouldn't reccomend it to a fan of XCOM.
I might to someone who's a fan of Nethack or ADOM.

No, if you place a file such as user/graphics/chara/chara_401.bmp, then it overwrites whatever sprite has that id in the spritesheet. Most of the ids are up on the wiki, but Beauty should already have the monster girls set up like that.

There might not have been those things in Rogue, but Nethack, ADOM, DDA, DF, and Dungeon Crawl all made those staples to the point they're standard to the genera.
Though, you are correct in that only perma-death mode is really Roguelike as we know it, and without it Elona is closer to an early WRPG like Wizardry.

Magic reactions happen when negative MP decreases for any reason, not just casting. It happens for each and every tick of MP decrease, so eye of mana is far and away superior over eye of illusion.

I'd recommend playing with the base assets for a while, and then swapping stuff out later if you feel like it. Particularly steer clear of Beautify unless you are prepared to pick and choose from hundreds of sprites, or want half the monsters and NPCs being replaced with seemingly random anime characters.

You can always modify the source and compile it yourself. CGX comes with reverse engineered source code, so it is much easier when using CGX than decompiled HSP from regular Plus.

I think it's easier to get to South Tyris than to grind one of your spells to L50, so I dunno why you're worried about finding that book. I'm not much of a spellcaster though, so I'm probably biased.
Anyway, personally I'd say you should get a Defender. Already has Healing Rain, and you could teach her Cheer right away if you've got the Natural Leader feat. If you want you could design her AI to stick close to you so she can heal you immediately if you get hurt.

That fixedart's pretty decent, so have your pet use it while you max out elemental damage on the rifle. Elemental damage enchantments are the best source of damage to my knowledge.
...Actually, come to think of it, as I recall the biggest downside of bloodsuck on living weapons is that it constantly interrupts you, but that wouldn't be a problem if it's a pet's weapon. Do people go all the way with their pets' living weapons?

I think the living weapon will come out much stronger in the end if you build it with lots of elemental damage, but I personally would go with the Gau17 since its strong as soon as you get it, has fantastic hit bonus, and doesn't require micromanaging level ups. The speed hit is negligible in act 2 and on.

Ether disease isn't a result of some kind of infection of ether, but rather from the ether killing off meshera, effectively destroying your immune system and making you susceptible to all kinds of weird and deadly diseases. I would personally recommend playing through 1.16. It is difficult and the graphics are janky, but it is the true Elona experience which everything else is based off of.

English communities tend to recommend Plus since it makes the early-game easier, adds a shitload of features and post-game content, and is heavily documented on the English wiki. However, lately the early game has gotten so easy that I wouldn't recommend it without using the options in CGX to revert all the post 1.90 experience boosting features.

Japanese communities tend to recommend Omake variants, which are more focused on polishing and adding new features to the base game, but there are a shitload of Omake variants to choose from and barely any English information on them.

I've been playing GX.2.07 and just beat Zeome (with better AI option) then immediately quit the game. The last time I played was Elona+Custom a few years ago and GX has become...so...easy? I am doing so much damage compared to what I remember from years ago, I'm lvl 58 and I just basically 1 shotted Zeome with unison impact doing 8700 damage. What is this shit?

I've also been playing oomsestepnc (dumb name btw) and compared to GX is night and day. It's so brutal in the beginning and I kinda prefer it so far. Some things I hate like
