I still can't believe that one of the best, most iconic Wakasagihime images of all times was drawn in about 60 minutes for 1draw in October 2021.
Is this what happens when you're skilled enough at drawing that your ideas can flow uninhibitedly from your brain onto the canvas?

From my perspective, it's not unhappiness, but confusion. I like the image because it mirrors the confusion of the viewer (why is Wakasagihime in the bathtub?), and more generally, the human condition (why are we here?).
By putting the only human element in the picture (wild freshwater mermaid) in a tiny, cheap looking bathtub, the artist is questioning why we pack ourselves (wild savannah ape) into cities.

Ah but the viewer fully understand why she is in the tub, for she would die if not for the water.
The true question that the viewer and waggy can't understand is as to what made her abandon her lake or what took her from there. You can assume it was the person who owns the tub, but then why is waggy so confused? Surely she would know if she was carried from her natural habitat into this cramped tub.
The means as to how she ended up here are unkown to us and her, thus asking the real question that the artist intended: How did we (primal apes) give up our original living spaces (the wilds, forests and caves) and replace them with the tub (modern cities) without ever realising it was happening as we are now confined by them and can't leave even if we wanted to.

Visible confusion is a transitional emotion: it cannot be maintained for long. It doesn't naturally transition into any particular emotion - unlike acute anger, happiness or sadness - and can thus serve as a pivot for action.
In this fleeting moment, Wakasagihime and the viewer have just awoken, suddenly seeing the bathtub that is our society. What will she do now? Will she ignore her confusion, and go back to how she was moments ago? Will she let her confusion turn into anger, and become an agent of change? Will she perhaps even cherish the bathtub, for supporting the tiny body of water she depends on?
