How does ZUN make all 18 mainline touhou games on his own?
>which includes composing a new ost for every entry in the franchise
>coding a game engine from scratch
>concept art and plot
>developing a new album/game every year
Is this guy even human?

>> No.38252533

he hammers out songs in like 2-3 hours, hasn't done an engine overhaul since like 14 apart from adding borderless options in 18, increased the dev cycle to two years and sometimes it's just tasofro struggling to get a game out in the off years so it's not like he does all that much
he has to find time to write the manga outlines and any other lore books he has ongoing too though

>> No.38252625

I've been trying the one man indie game thing using Godot for about a year now. ZUN's big advantage is this is his full time job, and he used to work for Taito.

And the writing/plot is the easy part. That just requires daydreaming.

>> No.38253004

didn't know he made the engine from scratch
also he has said that he kinda wings the stage 1~4 themes and puts most of his effort into stage 5,6 and EX but it was a passing comment on the danmaku kagura streams so idk how seriously he meant by it

He already has a framework in place. According to him, it takes 2 months to code it all.

You're about a decade late on everyone internalizing greentext site-wise, and about 8-7 years late on some autists on /jp/ who previously had no issue with greentext and general reaction images start using them as shibboleths to shut down topical threads without bothering to even address the topic.
So no, he really shouldn't.

I think Cave Story gets much more recognition as a quintessential one-man indie game due to it being a long polishing act by an outsider to the game dev scene. I think that's a more reasonable expectation for game development time.

I have been working on this concept of an STG for a while now with Touhou as the main inspiration, but I doubt I will ultimately be able to make much of it. Currently trying to learn music making and I've torn up a few of zun's midis and I have no idea what the fuck is going on in them. I hope to complete some sort of game by the end of this uni semester.

Holy based. Also, friendly reminder that j*nny (biggest threat to /jp/ culture) shares whiny faggots' annoying poser attitude. Derailing on-topic threads with template shitposts doesn't make them any less of shitposts. It's just /jp/ equivalent of wojaks, pepes and endlessly repeated buzzwords with only difference being that wojak gets new variant every few months while Marisa's thumb has been paralyzed for over a decade.

honestly his work pace is pretty average for someone who does his kind of work
pumping out art and music is easy if you're good at it , you get into the groove quickly
once you've done the base engine for gamedev it's also easy to make more games, especially if you make it the same genre over and over. not to insult him, i think it's smart of him to do so. if it ain't broke don't fix it...

You overestimate the ability of kindergarteners to translate their artistic imagination into a 2D form that is readily understood by others.

My drawing is actually at a kindergarten level primarily due to dysgraphia, and that's more like having to use a ruler to draw a stickman that isn't lopsided or wavy. Or work very slowly in small strokes.
But I can use pixel art programs and image editors just fine so I just lean on those.

ZUN probably just picked up drawing idiosyncratically and it meets his needs while giving a style.

>> No.38267977

>>38256045
You start out at relatively the same level.
The difference is that art in the west isn't relevant until the latter years of school. High School and onward. By then, it's no different than learning how to walk for the first time as an adult.
Some can draw well and are praised for it, but are never spurred to improve. Then there are others who are simply good at it and it does nothing more than impress people.
There's no career in art, especially out of an era where the meaning of a job meant being in an office 8 hours a week.
Most people who are gifted in art are often discouraged from continuing, much to great effect. The most famous example of such discouragement is probably Hitler, assuming it's true.

>> No.38268515

>>38267977
>Hitler
Hitler's real talent was architecture, which he was prevented from pursuing due to a lack of formal education. His painting wasn't bad, but he had a more traditonal approach while modern art was in vogue when he applied to art school.
In fact, despite being rejected from school Hitler continued with his art and was eventually able to make a meagre living from it. Then WWI hit and you generally know the rest. Hitler was already very interested in politics as early as 1900 though; see The Young Hitler I Knew by Kubizek for more.
