Dote Up a Cat was the first true VN I'd ever played, before that I played ones like Izumo and My Fair Angel. I didn't see it as very depressing. Yes it's sad what Jack does to Faye and watching her cry broke my heart but they work things out and the end was very happy. Same with Norma's route. Sure it wasn't perfectly happy throughout the whole game but the ending was sweet as hell. The twins route had nothing sad in it at all, unless you count Jack having sex with essentially kittens to be some form of abuse (nobody thinks of it like that).

Looking up the names for the game I stumbled across TV tropes saying it's an Utsuge primarily because some guy watched the opening and ending themes and never played the game. It's as much an Utsuge as Wanko to Kurasou, actually I'd say less so.

The story and world is a neat idea, I sorta feel bad that the characters are all trapped in a game that puts way too much emphasis oh "heat" and "smell" (the latter creeped me out a bit at every mention, wtf who pays that much attention to pheremones, even when it's the human characters involved?)
If it had been an anime that focused more on the cute stuff and the issue of the rights of the animals, that'd be nice.

Ears and a tail alone do not have a real impact on the humanity of a character. Mikan talks, acts, and looks like a human girl (albeit a cg one) with nothing but ears which look like no more than part of her hair. What about cosplay? Would you consider Hazuki to be furry for instance? She wears cat ears all the time. Is she furry? What about Ryoko who has an artificial mechanical tail that moves according to her emotions. Is she furry?

Please explain why cat ears and a tail = full and complete furry. Be honest. I'm curious how you respond.
