I have an unusual circumstance regarding my recognition of words, and I'm not sure why or what exactly is happening. Would someone mind giving their two cents on this?

I may recognize and associate the readings/kanji of various terms together, but I sometimes don't seem to connect the kanji or readings to any concrete images or concepts. For example, say I know something like 執拗; しつよう、can recognize the kanji and reading, cool. Yet, it may be that neither of those things imprint a lasting, resonating conceptual impression on me outside of some sort of frank logic of "執拗=しつよう"。It's AA=aaaa, not AA=[meaning].

It can sometimes be easier if I know terms containing the kanji/readings of another term because then you have signficance to draw from. 兵営 is perhaps easier if you know what 兵 is, or terms 営 is in. However, I don't always have that privilege of associated knowledge with every word. It's not like I have trouble remembering kanji or readings from raw immersion, but making connections to these things as a whole. Why is this happening? How can I make so many great congitive connections, but be so disconnected from the overall picture? I am seriously starting to think I'm autistic at this point.
