Meh my experience is the opposite. I couldn't remember shit from anki in the beginning so I stopped doing it. Eventually after seeing and looking up the most common kanji over and over I learned them when I couldn't from anki before. Now I use anki again and it's going much better.

Personally I do 15 and take a cheat day once a week (by which I mean I'm too busy on Wednesdays to do my reps). You end up with a lot on your plate, but that only matters if your goal is "clear the backlog every day" and not "study at least X cards a day" or "study for X minutes a day". Since your backlog is gonna grow anyway, basing your goals on how many cards you wanna study a day will help you stay focused and plan your time out better. It also makes it less disheartening if you get sick or something comes up and you end up with 300 cards to do all at once. You just go back to your personal goals and resume the grind.

Even with easy anime as those, if you're a complete beginner, just watching these is gonna do fuck all for you.
But if you take an episode, and view it as an study activity, looking up on words and so on, that's great for learning but can easily lead an episode that would 22 minutes to take 2 hours, so be prepared and view it as an study activity as opposed to a leisure one.
There was even that site with pre-built decks with the full vocab of media content, which can be great as a study addition. You first look up all vocab in the deck so when going into the anime you're not as crude, and the immersion will help hammer it down into your memory.

I do 20 as well, and a lot of those may not stick. Tho 10 (or even less) might look like too little early on.
So since shit starts to pile up, you may consider starting off with more, and then dropping new cards amount, or increase repetition.
It really depends on each one, their method of study, on how well they can take new vocab. I personally really struggle with remembering kanji, so I started taking more time with each one to try and remember it better, usually it takes about 1.5 ~2 hours.

you need to get to 3k kanji, 4k is more like it, just divide that between the number of days you wish for it to take you to get there
don't worry about that number too much though, in practice most kanji will stick to you magically through contact with them, and the ones youll have to go out of your way to remember will be a minority (provided you are reading/playing games/w/e)

I've heard that one of the best ways to learn is by subbing stuff since you end up doing research on things you're interested in. I already know enough but I want to start making subs (even if I made bad subs there's a few people that can help me fix them later).

Do you guys have any thoughts or recommendations for using Ai sites to convert JP audio to subs (or what other methods do people use?) and manually fixing the subs afterwards on aegisub?

I play games and watch my anime in Japanese. I visit Japanese sites and go to local Japanese stores often. All of the songs I listen to are almost exclusively Japanese. I even do Duolingo on the side, to try and link things together.

It's gotten me nowhere. At best, I can speak complete jibberish and have it sound eerily like Japanese by replicating the speech patterns and tones of a native speakers, but it's just mimicry. I've listened to some Japanese songs so many times that I can sing along with them accurately, start to finish. But I feel I'm not learning anything.

I've been doing this for years. My music playlist has been comprised of Vocaloid and J-Pop stars ever since I was 12. And yet, when I look online for help on how to finally learn this language, all I get are list upon list of "just watch movies, listen to music, read books, exposure exposure exposure". Okay, but how do you use that to actively learn the language? What do I pair it with so that these webpages go from aesthetic scribbles to actual, understandable, words? Just staring at Japanese reading, just randomly listening to Japanese podcast and songs, in isolation isn't working.

I've tried text buddies. I never understand them. It's still a jumbled mess when anything more complicated than an introduction becomes the topic. I integrate it into my life, calling things by their Japanese names, counting in Japanese, changing everyone's names in my contacts list to katakana. None of it sticks.

I want to move past this. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, or why just rubbing your face on Japanese seems to work for everyone else in the world. So how do you use this exposure effectively? How can I turn my favorite songs into a positive learning experience, or climb to a point of bare bones navigation on the Nico Nico site without Google translation? How can I use Dragon Quest 11's Japanese to bring me closer to my goal of being able to understand more and more, bit by bit?

I just use the default one, but if there was some like 'fonts randomizer' add on I woudl totally use that. Like every time a card shows up, it picks randomly from some small set of fonts. It would be great for maybe those moments where you dont' recognize a word just cause the font makes it look different. But I'm not particularly interested in getting better at reading a font so I'll jsut stick with the default that's similar to what you'll often see in digital environments
