As a beginner artist I can at least echo that. There's a lot of details to her outfit even if you take creative liberties. I haven't had this issue specifically with Misumaru but i've had the thought once or twice of saying fuck it to a 2hu with a complex design and just throw something piss easy like Sekibanki or Kisume.

Mike's color scheme is simpler and fits the calico cat theme. Misumaru's colors are all over the place, and ZUN had to add those multicolored magatamas all over too.

I guess it might be less of a problem for digital artists because they could just overlay a big color spectrum and color all of the magatama in at once that way, but for traditional artists we have to spend ages using a color for all of two seconds before switching to a barely different one

Some of the hus in UM came out fine.
The formula isn't that ZUN has to churn out good-looking or interesting characters people can jerk off to. He has to make ones that fit with the theme and plot he decided beforehand.

I imagine this is the type of post anon was talking about. Tribes aren't a racial thing, Japan had plenty of indigenous people with their own cultures. Who also got treated the same way as basically any other indigenous people in any other part of the world.

I don't know if there's a very specific one ZUN had in mind when designing her, I'd say "it can't be Ainu" but my knowledge of that begins and ends at Golden Kamuy and I'm not going to act like some wannabe historian when my source is a fucking manga, but that's besides the point of you being retarded.

My opinion is that ZUN's average design philosophy has gotten worse somewhere after 15. To summarize it, the appeal behind many of his best designs were that they were simple, yet had some sort of motif that made them recognizable.

For example, Cirno has a very simple blue dress, but details like her pointy ice wings and the triangular pattern at the edge of her skirt that resembles icicles make her distinct from the rest of the cast, even when seen from a distance. Her ice wings and triangle pattern don't fight for attention over her dress as all her visual attributes work together in unison. Another thing to note is that her color palette is also kept simple. Blue and white with a small red tie, befitting of an ice fairy.

Fast forward to 15, let's take a look at Sagume. She follows the same underlying principles. Sagume wears a simple purple dress with a beige(?) jacket. She has a unique arrow motif, shown on the cutout of her purple dress and as the trim on her jacket. Her wing also contributes to this, as the feathers have a thin sharp shape that spreads and fans outwards, sort of like the pattern on her clothes. Her color palette, while more elaborate (beige jacket, white wing, gray hair, red tie/eyes, purple dress, brown shoes) works together with the dress as the primary focus and the other colors and details being more subtle and not competing for visual attention.

Now let's look at Misumaru. She has a red shirt with white sleeves and an elaborate purple pattern. She has a yellow skirt with the same elaborate pattern in green, she has a headwear(?) that is white, purple, and red. She has a sash that is a much darker shade of purple, and all over her body are rainbow magatamas. There's no cohesion behind her design. All her colors blur together to make something that doesn't pop out or naturally guide your eye. Every detail is fighting for attention at the same time.

Most of UM either shares this problem (Chimata, Momoyo, Mike to a lesser degree) or too closely resemble another existing character to be distinct (Takane=Nitori, Megumu=Aya, Sannyo=Yorihime).

Although Megumu being a more traditional tengu than Aya can lead to some interesting scenarios, and it's not like Hatate can't be called purple Aya either.

Weird you say that because I was going to mention Tsukasa being popular, but apparently Chimata scored higher in the popularity poll. It might just be the final boss bonus + the sheer wtf factor. You do have a point with Hatate being purple Aya, which is funny because I like her design. Maybe Megumu needs more time to grow on me. Her dynamics as being Aya's superior should make for some interesting stuff, even if 90% of it is likely to be fan content.

Tsukasa seems to be more popular in general though, just not as concentrated. More people will use the sex fox as material for a joke, will foxpost, will just generally think about her, but since she's a evil manipulative slut not so many people will rank her in the top 10 or whatever.
