I dunno, anon, given what OP wrote, it does seem that the shikigami programming had been suppressing the kitsune all this time, and it's only with the events of the new game that the fox started to recover its memories and began to influence the gestalt entity known as "Ran", moving it away from serving Yukari unquestioningly.
Programming living creatures is obviously pretty different from a pure machine, and Ran's shikigami programming being so dominant is evidently supposed to show Yukari's skill, but it's still operating on a conscious creature with a will of its own, so the shikigami must be created to work with the original creature, instead of simply puppeteering the body.

I can get where people get the idea that Ran might oppose Yukari at some point. Shikigami in mythology can get out of control if the master is careless, which considering Yukari's sleeping habits and style of discipline, Ran might be getting to a point where she is fed up with Yukari's shit that the power she gains isn't worth as much as it was when she first went under possession. Yukari could have been overconfident in her ability and thought herself infallible, which considering her track record is quite plausible. Ran forgets her place as a shiki, acts without orders, and has a shiki so she's got plenty of will of her own. Combine that with lots of free time to kill and it's possible she spent quite a while mulling over herself and introspecting, analyzing anything and everything and weighing the pros and cons. There's potentially more things we don't know about that Ran was hiding from Yukari.

Ran's characterization and specifics on how she and shikigami works are all convoluted to say the least. First she was her own character and the fox and shiki were one and the same, same deal with Chen; then they weren't and they are completely separate beings. 20 years of contradicting information, but I can't say that's necessarily a bad thing: Reimu for example is all over the place on her characterization and it is all technically canon, but the arguments around what she really is isn't nearly as hot as what Ran's character is, people just accept that it is this way and pick a version they like best. As for Ran, does she remember her past because Yukari's influence is waning? Or did she always have that sense of self and remember things pre-possession?
Her fanon characterization stemmed from PCB and stuck with most people and that's where she was the most "personable." In SSiB and contemporary works, she's made out to be a pawn that Yukari has to debug and act stupid so Yukari can divulge her plans to the reader. One line stuck out to me that was along the lines of 'you can do complex math but can't add simple numbers together' when talking about the SDM rocket. Regardless of this characterization, Ran is clearly her own character here and runs contradictory to that. Ran does not look like she's struggling to act on her own.
I'm looking forward to the full TL to see what was done and correct my speculation.

Now, Yukari isn't perfect, so her computer sometimes performs unintended actions (STILL WITHIN THE PARAMETERS) which she needs to correct. The Terminator has a human personality and is able to perform autonomously, but ultimately its function is to protect John and to listen to the child versions orders. If John commanded it to stop speaking ever and focus on absolute efficiency above all, it would, and its nature as a robot would become evident to everyone. Yeah that's why I believe that her past relationship interferes with her shikigami programming to the point of hindering it.
