Any good resources on exercises for learning / practicing Kana? Sorry for the newbie question.

>> No.44506590

A lot of people want to learn Japanese cause they want to understand Japanese media in its original language cause it is a more "pure", for lack of a better word, expression of the author's intent. However, in the beginning they will suck at Japanese so much that reading a translation, even a shit one, will get them a better understanding of the author's intent. Once they are fluent, they will obviously understand the author's intent better in the original language.
Finally, the question. Roughly how long/how many words does someone need to know before it makes more sense to read something in Japanese if they want to understand the author's intent or message of the work better?
There is a lot of stuff I want to watch and read, but I am saving it for when I am better at Japanese cause I know I won't truly appreciate it with my level of understanding. So, right now, I am reading and watching stuff that I like, but knowing that if I read or watched in English, I would understand it more. Basically, when does that end and me watching/reading in Japanese means I understand it more than in English? To be clear, I'm not asking when will it be as easy as English or as effortless, I'm just asking about understanding the author's intent or main message or the work. With lookups, I should be able to understand the author's intent better than a translation without needing to be fluent. That's cause a translation inherently messes with the author's intent so, you can never fully understand it with one.

Try a kana drag and drop program. They work great.
The one I used when I was learning (Usagi-chan's Genki Resource Page) used Flash so you probably can't use it, but if you type kana drag and drop into your search engine of choice you should get several results that function.
It took me about three hours of dragging and dropping to brute force memorize the kana. See if you can beat my time.

It depends on how much you care about efficient time usage.
If you have all the time in the world, even if it's the first thing you've ever read in Japanese, with an electronic dictionary and elbow grease you can get more meaning out of a text than you would from reading a bad translation. (And about as much as much meaning as a good translation, although I imagine you know as well as I do how rare those are.)
The issue is that reading with good comprehension is absurdly slow when you're new. I used To Love-Ru as a textbook when I was starting out and I think my reading speed was something like fifteen minutes a page. If you've never read To Love-Ru, these were pages with small amounts of easy text with furigana. It doesn't really get easier than that.
The good news is that this is very effective studying and your reading speed will improve asymptotically as your vocabulary and experience grows. But it will be excruciatingly slow for a while.
In terms of being able to read with solid comprehension without it being agonizingly difficult, I'd say three months of reading experience at minimum. And you'll be going turtle speed for at least your first year. You'll be getting more out of a story than you would from a good translation I'd say within your first two years.
Watching is harder because you are forced to go at a specific pace. I'd recommend just picking an arbitrary young children's anime and watching it until it feels comfortable, then working your way up age levels until you can watch anything.
If you'd like a recommendation for a decent young children's anime, I watched the original かみさまみならい ヒミツのここた (picrel) as my starter raw anime and enjoyed the experience.
Gun to my head I'd say it'd take you a hundred episodes-ish total to get decent listening comprehension, but depending on how you approach it that number could vary wildly.

There's no harm in putting off stroke order until way later.
I've been learning Japanese for eight years and I've probably written down stuff in 日本語 with a pen or pencil less than two hundred times.
And even then if you do the strokes in the wrong order it's not like the Yakuza will cut off your pinky or anything.
I'd say for now focus on what's going to help you the most with your immediate goals. If that's reading a book, watching an anime, listening to a podcast, talking to people in Japanese, or really most things, stroke order won't help you very much. Put a bookmark in it and come back to it when it starts becoming a problem.
Good luck with your studying! The journey of a thousand kanji starts with a single あ.

My word/kanji study routine:
>play game
>trace every single fucking character with your finger, even in kana soup games. if the dialogue says ひび, you do 罅. do use some common sense and ignore words you have 0 interest in
>recite the names of the parts as you go. for 罅, it would be ほとぎ(缶) (the can character thingy) + とらかんむり(虍) (the top part of the tiger character 虎) + the thingy on the side of 呼ぶ (乎, only found it in じっと/凝乎と)
>if it's a new one, think of other similar characters to jog my memory (卿? reminds me of 柳(やなぎ). 髏? It's got the shit on the left of 数's old form (數) on the right). if possible, try to make sense of the parts (投げる has 扌(てへん) the hand radical, so it likely has something to do with hands)
>also, write down at least one word for each character on a txt file for future reference. ideally, group similar characters together to make it easier to search in case your memory fails (薔薇/バラ? same line as 微妙(びみょう), 特徴(とくちょう), 懲役(ちょうえき), 黴/カビ, etc. also, 吝嗇(りんしょく) on the next line)

pros
>beats blindly drilling lines of runes like a retard anyday
>I can read almost anything aloud
>I can write by hand. 0 stroke order mistakes (you can guess strokes orders on the spot 98% of the time from rules and the parts, the rest are outlier patterns)
>I can write shit like 嚔, 龜, 腱鞘炎, 嚢胞, 蠟燭, 鑿, 髑髏, 爨ぐ(炊ぐ), 宥める, 窘める, 嗜み, etc. from memory
cons
>it's slow
>I don't know how the fuck to use most of the words I'm reading (哀哭(あいこく)? It's sort of like lamentation and 哭 is related to 泣, that's all I know lol)
>I have 0 idea on how to integrate 4nipmoonrunewords into the process
>I have non-existent active language skills

I wouldn't recommend them for kanji learning since they don't list all the readings. e.g.

>not こする, こすれる, or なする
>inb4 b-but muh usually written in kana
I wonder what the fuck you'll do when you see shit like はず in kanji (筈)
Also that Switch game doesn't let you look up kanji by writing them. You have to either look up by reading, radical, or stroke count.

the point is that you don't overthink grading a card. some people will think about which grade to give a card for so long that it ruins any efficiency gained from using the right grades. also, some people abuse the hard button anytime something is even a little bit difficult, which gets them in anki ease hell where they have a decent retention rate but they still have a ton of reviews cause the ease factor of all their cards is super low.
if you can decide on a grade in <1 second, then use the easy button. still avoid the hard button though.

>A lot of words can't be figured out without context.
Why are you trying to understand words outside of context?

a lot of those words don't use have kanji, but outside of specialized textbooks aren't really commonly used.
I think it's more important to understand how かける is used to express the action of a person/something "hanging" something than the associated Kanji. BTW "hang" is not really appropriate, think of かける as more of "a person/something putting something on top of something" and a lot of words/phrases that use かける start to make more sense

例えば、
>話しかける (to talk to someone/ to start a converstaion) 彼に話しかけられたんだけど
>追いかける (to chase after/ to pursue) 警官たちってひき逃げ容疑者を追いかけている。
>腰掛ける (to sit on/ to sit down onto something) 座っていい?じゃあ、こっちの根本に腰掛けます。

上下 (じょうげ) is probably more common usage as in 上下関係 the relationship between superiors and inferiors
市場 (しじょう)and (いちば)really derive on the context. しじょう is more of a broader term than encompasses things like the stock market, while いちば is a description of a physical marketplace more so of the local variety, like fish market, farmers market etc.
擦る is either こする or する, こする is generally used to describe a rubbing motion for cleaning purposes and する is a more general term for rubbing.

Unless you have ambition on becoming a Japanese Lawyer, I wouldn't worry too much about these tiny details because most Japanese people aren't this pedantic.

Because you can't for some of them. You see 上がる only, you can't tell which meaning it refers to. Hence my recommendation of adding a little note next to the word for the OCD autists.
At the end of the day, I don't give a shit. It's just a stupid deck and I already finished it, so it's not like it's my problem.

I hate it too, but if you stick with it you'll learn a lot of Japanese quickly.

>>44516133
上がる simply can be dumbed down to "going up"
階段を上がる "go up the stairs"
価格が上がる "prices go up"
昇進して上がる "to be promoted/ to go up in position"
Now there are some more abstract usages of あがる that require one experience it context to fully grasp what あがる is telling us.
出来上がる "to finish up"
仕事が上がる "to finish up your work"
料理が上がる "to be served up food"
上がってください "please come in/ please step up the 玄関 into my home"

I'm not a master of Japanese so take my explanations with a grain of 塩, but I'm 5 years deep, 11-13k words deep, and about to see if I can score 100 on the N1 this winter.

Very clever and inventive. However, as I'm sure you know, they often have little to do with the literal meaning of the preposition (e.g. put up with, mess up, eat sth up, gear up, write up, give up, form up). It goes without saying that this gives the Japanese a lot of trouble.

Still gives a ton of useful advice:
>音符 (貨物(かもつ), contains and shares a reading with the much more common 化 from 変化) and 意符 (anything with 貝 likely has to do with money)
>group kanji with similar components together (構成, 排水溝, 購入)
>take advantage of the 6 (I think) patterns for compounds to remember (e.g. in 睡眠, both characters share the kun-reading ねむる)
>it's worth checking out the meaning of a rune just in case as they turn out useful occasionally
>write the runes 3 times at most. useful enough to help you remember without tiring you out (I recommend writing the words though)
>read as you write shit

jisho marks ピンク as a common word but not 桃色
the only time i saw 桃色 used commonly was in machikado mazoku with momo.
i guess there is a nuance is that if something is specifically peach-pink then you'd used 桃色, but 桃色 is itself just a shade of ピンク which is the general word.
it guess like how saying something is red is more common than saying it's scarlet which a lot of people would also just say is red.

Confused about the new cards per day in Anki

I was using a different app and I want to switch to Anki (because you couldn't really choose your words in the other program), but that means I'm starting out already knowing at least four or five hundred words.

Is there any to get started with the core 2k deck and like "gauge" where I am? So, say that I learn 10 new words and already knew like 8 of them from the course I was using before Anki, how can I go on and learn more that day? I don't want to only have learned like 2 words that day

You can press ctrl+delete on new cards and they will be removed from your deck without lowering the new card per day count.
You can also suspend them, it does the same thing but keeps the card in your deck

god this app is such garbage though, now it literally says oldest cards are being showed first, but its giving me a random order every time.

Yes. Helps you break down moonrunes into more familiar, manageable pieces. Not all pieces are radicals though.
Any other retarded questions you can easily google yourself?
