Yuta Aoki , or "That Japanese Man Yuta", is a youtuber with ~a mil subscribers. Almost throughout every video he advertises his emailing list, so i thought: eh, why not, more japanese learning, even if elementary, couldn't hurt.

It was real weird though.

Other than the emails made to seem personal but are mass sent by bots aside, the four part email series on learning japanese was vv weird. He uses all this sad sob story type stuff in order to get you to sign up for his paid course (which is outrageously expensive, by the way), and all his videos use romaji, even after what I would consider to be stepping off material from that alphabet.

After the sending of strange videos, again and again more and more slightly manipulative emails are sent my way from this guys ass dude. I didn't block just to see what happened. Mans sends me an 11 part series of these really poorly made videos. I had to see what's up man.

I check his website (https://members.japanesevocabularyshortcut.com/spage/course-open-trial.html?dfp=3xYy87X3xq go on its a laugh), and i think its really absolutely atrocious. Maybe its just because its so differing from what i would reccomend but still.

First, he starts off with the slightly wrong statement that you need ~800 words to be nearly conversationally fluent in both english and japanese ? (I don't play the numbers game but i think around 1,000 - 3,000 words is around 80% average comprehension). Even 80%, let alone 75%, is nowhere near enough comprehension to comfortably learn new material, let alone be able to do all the blasphemous things he mentions one may be able to do after finishing his "course".

Next, he goes on to discourage people from using tried and true things like Anki, textbooks (to some extent), and even daily immersion, one of the core building blocks of learning any language !

he says, and i quote:

"You can try using real-life resources from the start. But there’s a problem: they might be too hard for beginners and intermediate learners. When something is too hard, your brain shuts down. It’s frustrating and you lose focus."

??? the entire reason why most people don't use a classroom environment to learn such languages is because they work along the route of having you understand everything and never learning anything new before moving on. this entire narrative is atrocious and is extremely detrimental. I pity any poor beginner whos a fan of the guy and now thinks that the things he discouraged are useless, and learning languages with 100% comprehension, "level-like", is better!

TL;DR: Yutas Japanese programs don't seem to fare anything useful, and to me, look like they would only serve as a detriment to the beginning japanese learner. if his paid course is anything like mentioned above, please do not waste your money on the useless jargon he spits. You should much rather just stick to the youtube content he makes instead.

The real anti-japan agenda is how databases used by online dictionaries are being actively sabotaged by the west because they are actively trying to stop as many people as possible from learning Japanese.
These days you will get definitions that are either comically dry or outright wrong, exactly to push the "Japanese is too dry/robotic" meme.
For example look up 岩石 and 岩根 if you don’t believe me, pro tip: they aren’t synonyms.
You think it’s a freaky exception? It’s not, look up 降雪 and 天華, or 強風 and 一陣.
Again, they aren’t synonymous, or they are in the same sense “trees” and “delightful grove” are technically synonyms, in fact the rocks example isn’t even a synonym, not even close.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg by the way, look up 前, 先, 嘗て or 往 if you want to see how fucked up things have been for a while now.
Do yourself a favor and throw your EN > JP dictionary bookmarks in the trash where they belong, and bookmark kotobank,jp, because the sabotage has gotten so bad that throwing words at a JP > JP dictionary and using MTL on the result gives you more accurate definitions with far more depth than whatever garbage the west is trying to feed you.

i made a discord to engage in kanji quizzes with people here (when i started posting with a name here it was all "who can beat me in a kanji battle") and it just evolved into a bit of a separate community which ended up influencing a lot of people/talked about in a lot of other places

but it's not like i went on reddit and talked about animecards, the only thing i actually posted on reddit was my kanken deck because i worked on it a long time and wanted people to appreciate it, well reddit didn't care i got barely any upboats and the thread died really fast, but the deck has established itself as the 'main' tool in western kanken learning circles so it was worth it

so how do you define winning? no, i didn't make a fraction of the money matt did, but that wasn't my goal
as for influence on the japanese learning community? i think matt probably did more for the general "idea" of interacting with japanese content for learning, even though a lot of people did it before he became bigger, while my ideas and contributions FAR MORE influence the concrete meta of language learning

The day is 4/13/24, which means it has been a solid 10 years since I started learning Japanese in high school. Wow! Double digits. As always I try to make a post in DJT to commemorate this. How fateful that the OP is a pic of a game I translated.

This year is slightly more interesting since something highly relevant to learning Japanese occurred: I went to Japan. Even when learning Japanese, I never once thought I would go to Japan. I'm a shut-in that considers gaijin a blight on a beautiful country that deserves to best well be left alone, if we want their culture that produces the media we love to remain, at least. But I ended up going since a friend of mine asked me to come.

The first thing I will say is that pronunciation practice - pitch accent and all that - is not a meme. My pronunciation was not good at all, and it was not just a matter of needing to speak more slowly; I needed to shift my mouth in unfamiliar ways and contort my mind to pronounce words in comprehensible ways. Over the past 10 years I have built up quite a few mis-readings and mispronunciations of words which would have remained undetected forever on my lonesome. As a random example, I had the reading of 矛盾 locked in as むじゅうん in stead of むじゅん in my mind. Completely harmless, until you try to say it and people give you a weird look. Times a lot. Anyway, so my input is obvious, but perhaps meaningful to someone out there: READING, AND TO SOME EXTENT LISTENING, IS NOT ENOUGH FOR SPEAKING. It's very plausible for someone to listen way more than me and have perfect pronunciation off the bat, but 10 years of watching anime and reading books were not enough for me to immediately start passing for a native when I spoke. There were quite a few humiliating instances where I was trying to say some idiom and realized I could recognize the jukugo but had been skipping over actually reading it, so when the time came I couldn't reproduce it and just floundered. So my advice is: you likely will in fact need to hang out in discord calls or talk to yourself in a mirror while focusing intently on pronunciation to iron these things out if you want to pass for a native, unless you are more naturally talented than me.

However, this is also somewhat moot. Tokyo and Kyoto are so Gaijin-ified knowing the language hardly matters half the time. There are specific signs instructing gaijin what to do in English, and in fact seemingly everyone and their mother has this little pocket device which auto-translates language (that is, you speak in English and it machine translates it into Japanese what it plays on speakers, then they speak in Japanese to it and it produces English). One of them tried using them on me and I just answered in Japanese while the thing spoke in English, but they kept using it on pure instinct. Gaijin are a disease and the people of these major cities are extremely vaccinated. Every time I floundered in speech I did so when I was going out of my comfort zone, like hitting up yakuza in a seedy bar or trying to converse with a hostess in a ryokan. Because of this, there is not necessarily actually a lot to talk about when it comes to the experience of going to Japan after spending a lot of time self-learning. You will be fine basically no matter what, it just lets you have some interesting conversations with people that otherwise would hold up a gaijin sign and shrug until you leave. For example, a girl noticed a Patchouli keychain I had and walked up to me asking if I liked touhou. I talked to this girl about touhou before she left.

In short, after 10 years of whacking off to sailor moon nukige my Japanese was tested in Japan. It was mundane except realizing my pronunciation was worse than I thought. Practicing speaking is good if you want to pass as a native and not get confused looks. Very insightful. I don't know what it would be like in the 95% of Japan which is not so Gaijin-vaccinated; probably a lot different. The end.
