It's just brilliant and fits Eirin so well while giving this whole lunar feel about it during the chorus. Almost like the men she doomed to failure of their mission are saluting her.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Eirin is superior to Kaguya in every way. She's a better character, her theme is better, her boss fight is harder and she's so much more attractive.

The xylophone breakdown and horns trump everything 1970 does.

I'm not sure when it comes to 1969 and 1970 though, both have their places but 1970 is kind of like Border of Life (resurrection) for pure tension. Though it's not quite as tense seeing as in PCB you've just defeated Yuyuko and still have to survive the resurrection to get the 1CC.

Well, on appearance I'll put that down to personal tastes, I suppose the same can be said for her character. Personally I like her intelligence, loyalty all the while having a kind of schemer quality about her. If Kaguya were the Caliph, Eirin would be her attractive busty Grand Vizier taking down her leaders orders and coming up with practical (though not necessarily ethical) ways of putting those orders into practice. As a pair they work well, kind of like how Kaguya and Mokou play off one another, but Kaguya comes out of it all looking like a bit of a unhinged princess, fighting just to stave off boredom, Eirin does all the work, Eirin is the mastermind with Kaguya as her purpose.

As for looks, well it's a traditional beautiful hime-cut princess vs. a busty doctor with a kind of mature charm about her. Down to preferences I guess, I won't deny Kaguya is beautiful, it's in her very character and legend to be the seemless princess, a bit over done for me though the same could be said for mature women doctor/nurses.

After that, I think general concensus agrees Eirin's boss fight is better, and the theme is down to opinion but I think most prefer Gensokyo Millenium. It fits so perfectly.

As much as I hate some of Chado's DBZ bullshit, I have admit that Kaguya works so much better as a character and a villain if she's gone batshit crazy from living too long, though in a sense it doesn't work from the perspective of a long lives Lunarian, it gives Kaguya a sense of threat to be around her. As she is right now she's just a useless princess sitting out her life in her little bamboo palace enjoying a simple life of luxury and the rare competition with Mokou. I'm not sure you could even call that sinister anymore.

I just sat here and relistened to Immortal Smoke, Lunatic Princess, Voyage 1969 and Voyage 1970 and just nostalgiasm'd all over the place. Feeling the urge to go back to some PCB, but 4 is enough for today.

Can't forget Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil either, sure it may have aged a bit compared to the later Touhou games, but the majority of it's BGMs are classics even if you ignore the overplayed ones like Septette for the Dead Princess and Un Owen was Her, I still consider Lunar Dial to be one of my favourite themes of all time, it's fucking rocking and Shanghai Alice of Meiji 17 is classy.

Seriously, though, the trumpets in 1969 get to me. Moreso than other ZUN-trumpets, which I'm generally OK with.

But 1970... It's so effective at conveying how intense the situation is, as you're going through the Last Word rush... Definitely one of my favorite ZUN-tracks.

I think what we can all agree on is that ZUN has a talent for making his BGMs fit the game and their setting perfectly. In PCB you get a feeling of Winter turning to Spring, in IN you get a feeling of night before we move into the Bamboo palace, then it before the end it gives of his heavenly space theme. In Mountain of Faith you get this perfect autumn feeling throughout.

Individually we may like or dislike certain themes but in their own games they work wonders and it's part of the reason why Touhou is loved.

That's approximately correct, though I'd say SA sneaks out ahead, due to Utsuho's theme being the best video game boss music I ever expect to hear.

I think he picks a theme and then maybe picks out the kind of characters he'd like while thinking of the kind of music he wants. I think we'd have to look to one of his interviews to fully understand the process though.

I disagree personally on the same grounds as I don't hold Mountain of Faith up to the standards of EoSD, PCB and IN, sure it's pretty consistant with it's good themes and has some excellent themes from time to time, but it doesn't quite bring out the same excellence.

Probably one of the most appropriately tense final boss themes about though. I fucking love Utsuho's theme when played along side the game sounds to the end.

I'd say that's partially true, even if you were trying to troll. All the beautiful set patterns and relaxing backgrounds, well timed music with a focus on concentrating on those patterns and navigating them.

It's amusing to think this all started not because ZUN wanted to tell a story, but because he wanted to see a certain type of bullet hell game that didn't exist at the time and this is his idea of the perfect shooting game. It's not about being the hardest game, but more the experience, the patterns and the music.

I used to rank MoF's soundtrack low, but then I realized that it makes me feel awesome while I'm playing so now it's in my A tier with PCB. There aren't any I actually dislike so it's hard to pick.
