What is this?

/jp/ has started on a project to translate the visual novel Hatsukoi, one of the highest rated according to the Japanese.

Are you in need of translators?

Of course! Anyone with knowledge of Japanese (and English) is welcome to join in and start translating with the simple and easy-to-use REtrans™ Web Interface.

Are you in need of editors?

Definitely. You don't even need to know Japanese to help improve the English text, so your participation is encouraged.

What is the length/progress/ETA?

The total length of the content is approximately 32k lines. We are at approximately 51%.

Tried it a bit and looks like it'll be quite useful. Two things I have a bit of a quibble about though:
1. When I select a box to go to "editting mode", all the boxes shrink to equal sizes including the box with all the text. This makes it somewhat harder to read, especially boxes with more text than others.

2. It'd be nice if the original Japanese text can be somewhere near the text to be overwritten. Sometimes I forget what I was going to write, and if I already overwrote part of the original text, I have to CTRL+Z and start the line over.

But other than that it's great. Will make it easier to work with definitely.

In the main view, you can now click the column number in the header, marked 'Single', to enter single-column-editing mode for that column, which shows the original alongside the edited row. This works in much the same way as multi-column view, except of course you can't edit the original. The 'Multi' link in the table header will bring you back to the multiple-column view.

Tripfags, Namefags, anonymous, lend me your ears;
I come to praise Cudder, not to bury him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Cudder. The noble !w4lolitaKs
Hath told you Cudder was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Cudder answer'd it.
Here, under leave of !w4lolitaKs and the rest--
For !w4lolitaKs is an honourable tripfag;
So are they all, all honourable tripfags--
Come I to speak in Cudder's thread.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But !w4lolitaKs says he was ambitious;
And !w4lolitaKs is an honourable tripfag.
He hath brought many translators home to REtrans
Whose lines did the general CSVs fill:
Did this in Cudder seem ambitious?
When that the poor have cried, Cudder hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet !w4lolitaKs says he was ambitious;
And !w4lolitaKs is an honourable tripfag.
You all did see that on the TLwiki
I thrice presented him a kindly offer,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet !w4lolitaKs says he was ambitious;
And, sure, he is an honourable tripfag.
I speak not to disprove what !w4lolitaKs spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My post is in the thread there with Cudder,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

Why are there people who think that somehow changing the place it's hosted somehow stops it from being a 'jp project?' The only thing you're doing is getting away from the current project leader and starting an autonomous project. If anything it's anonymousish that way

Who cares if it was made for /jp/ or not.

It was made to host VN/eroge translation projects. If you were going to be using some public SVN/SCM hosting someplace, would you be upset because it wasn't made for /jp/?

Besides, I'm pretty sure many people involved in projects hosted on TLWiki do lurk /jp/ too, so it's still a shared userbase.

I don't really care how you're hosting it as long as you guys get organized and get the project going. It seems one of your main translators was discontent with how Cudder was running the project so he made a fork on TLWiki. Although it's probably possible to backport edits to and from ReTrans and TLWiki, it'd probably be wasted effort unless done in an automatic manner (import bot?). That way everyone could be pleased.

Indeed he was discontent, but given that he demands thanks even after he damages the file we entrusted to him, and essentially fails to "see the light at the end of a long dark tunnel", I'm doubtful of his innocence and maturity. Maybe you find my management strategies harsh, but that's because we're driving the project forward, giving it a direction everyone should face. Let's be clear: You're not doing this because you want fame and recognition, you're doing this because you have a goal --- Anonymous' goal --- to finish this and show them: "We can do it!"

As for exchanging edits between the two sites, they are at a disadvantage since they're using a completely different format which will require extensive processing for even the game engine to use (e.g. they mixed all the columns together into one huge jumble of text), but we're plug-and-play, and with RWI-AJAX, we can be more productive than ever before.

You still seem immature.
If you think you can do the rest on your own here, by all means please do so. It saves me the trouble, and I have school to deal with so I don't really need any extra hassles.

I didn't do this for fame or recognition. I just did it because I like translating, but you were just too much of a bitch for me to stay quiet about it.

Anyways, good luck. I'll be watching the people on the TLWiki side to see what they want to do, but this isn't a competition, and both our goals are the same: the completion of Hatsukoi,
so if you can do this on your own, more power to you. However, even if activity stops suddenly again I won't be helping you any further. I can't put up with your behavior.

I'm an expert on these matters, so listen up and listen good - I'll try to keep this simple but it won't be easy, because I am an expert, as I mentioned previously.

Hearing the difference now isn't the reason to encode to FLAC. FLAC uses lossless compression, while MP3 is 'lossy'. What this means is that for each year the MP3 sits on your hard drive, it will lose roughly 12kbps, assuming you have SATA - it's about 15kbps on IDE, but only 7kbps on SCSI, due to rotational velocidensity. You don't want to know how much worse it is on CD-ROM or other optical media.

I started collecting MP3s in about 2001, and if I try to play any of the tracks I downloaded back then, even the stuff I grabbed at 320kbps, they just sound like crap. The bass is terrible, the midrange...well don't get me started. Some of those albums have degraded down to 32 or even 16kbps. FLAC rips from the same period still sound great, even if they weren't stored correctly, in a cool, dry place. Seriously, stick to FLAC, you may not be able to hear the difference now, but in a year or two, you'll be glad you did.

Now for the serious answer:
Can you guys build a patch with the files that you uploaded to TLWiki, do you have all the tools? Did anyone test if everything is working right? Otherwise, it would be a shame to translate everything and then realize you have to copy pasta all the text all over again because you corrupted the format originally.

???

I'm sorry, I don't really understand what you're saying.
When did I say the files breaking was Cudder's fault?

Yeah, it's fine to say "oh, could you fix this, it looks like it's buggy around here" but she made a huge fucking deal out of it.
Something like "Now we have a whole fucking half file broken because of Lennar". It was one comma at the exact spot where the file was messed up on retrans. I'm still amazed she couldn't figure it out herself.

She's never said anything positive to me. Yet afterwards she praises two IPs for putting in a few lines in, telling them to keep up the good work and everything, when they're putting in shitty SUGOI ojou-sama translations. I guess Cudder hates me? I mean, seriously, even with the file thing, it wasn't even a big deal. It was instantly fixed, and more importantly, Anzu was finally done, yet Cudder was here raging about how the file is TOTALLY FUCKED UP~~~!! Oh heavens no!

Don't worry, as long as we keep line numbers, and are able to extract the actual dialogue field from the final translation on the wiki and match it with the line number field properly (which yes, we can), insertion back into the scripts will be a piece of cake.

Cudder, besides being a shit person, is also a shit programmer who thinks that simple text operations are somehow "difficult" and that to avoid this horrible horrible morass of thorny problems that can't be solved by anything less than A WHOLE ENTIRE REGEX OMG, one must use fucking SQL or something, who knows

I've read through all of Karin's route too, and from those two routes I'll say this game isn't going to be groundbreaking at all, but it's still quite charming. It's better than Brass Restoration and ONE I'd say.
I haven't looked through Anzu's route for errors yet, but I personally translated a big majority of common (5000+ lines) and several hundred of Karin and I'm pretty sure I didn't fuck up too much considering this isn't exactly the most difficult VN out there. Oh it was Nefelpitou that was doing Komomo. Mixed you guys up. Either way it's your choice what to translate next, or whether you even want to continue translating Hatsukoi. It'd definitely help if you continued on something though (Coco,TL check, edit, etc.).

>>4975457
That explains it. I only looked through the first two or so pages. Was there an issue with 稔 though? I had a big hiatus on this project for about 2-3 months, and checked back a week or 2 ago to see loldrama so I don't really know what issues came about in the meantime.

But I'm glad this project has been moving. I'll get cracking again once I finish finals in about 3 weeks. I'd appreciate it if whoever that was also working on Karin sub in for me until then.
GJ all.

Without doing a thorough formal review, I can already see that it'll work most but not all of the time. First of all, the Text::CSV documentation clearly states that "while(<>)" won't work with embedded newlines. Secondly, as far as I know, TLwiki uses UTF-8 but the engine wants Shift-JIS. I also didn't see any handling for the unique quirks of the engine's CSV parser.

Not fond of reinventing the wheel, iconv can do codepage conversion at the last moment.

Newlines... Should you even allow them? I believe I saw one case in the translated (*not* the original) part somewhere, but IMO that's just asking for trouble. I'd treat that as broken.

Don't see a problem filtering out anything that's known to cause problems with the game (haven't checked, but I assume there are characters it doesn't like or a limit to the line length, at least). I'd prefer to do that in a separate script, though.

The fanbase is indeed pretty small for this one, but that's not the point; rather, it was chosen because of the initial interest in trnaslating it, and now it has proved that anonymous translation projects can work decently well.

Excellent progress. YUSUMI and COMMON should be the next to receive some editing, as the others have yet to be completed.

So then does that mean there will be other projects after this one? I don't mind helping out on another after this one finishes. How are we going to choose the next title though?

It's whatever anons want to and are willing to translate. There's no reason to restrict ourselves to one at a time either -- as long as there's interest, we can spawn project sites for those interested to work on (e.g. Editorashi ran alongside this one for a few months.)
