I saw utaban with OG in it theother day. it was sad because I guess that is all they can do since no one has been doing anything new in their careers either. Plus, it probably brings ratings out of nostalgia people have for that generation.

It is easy to blame the hosts but I find that the girls don't work very hard in making themselves interesting. One might argue that the hosts' over-emphasis on gen 1-3 hurt everyone else. In fact, I've got tons of old videos of Rika being boring and ignored much of the time. However, all the 4th generation pried their way into the hosts' circle of attention and by the end, Tsuji was a special favorite of Nakai. They never quite warmed up to Yossi or Rika but they always gave them screen and talk time.

It was REALLY different with 5th gen. They never got much screen time because they were shy at first but they never quite pushed out either. Mako was like Kei 2.0 and Takahashi was sort of a weirdo they could mock once in a while. But unlike 4th gen...that is it! Then when the older girls graduated and it became a death cycle of boringness and unfamiliarity. Sayumi's cutesy act also probably wouldn't work against the hosts. They thrive on weirdness and earnestness (Kaori when she was crazy, Kei, Nacchi, Maki, Tsuji). They never work well with self-aware and self-styled idols -- they were weird with Matsuura too.

I'm not a golden era fag but my complaint is that some of the members seem really ditzy (ie in the dvd mags). linlin, aika and maybe takahashi seem ok. Aikia just because she seems more nervous than she does ditzy. The rest seem very "bland" if that makes sense.

Plus most of their music depresses me by how horrible it is. They released two good singles for example and I finally decided to start following the group again but then they released kimagure princess which made me rage for weeks. I really wanted to like MM but gave up them.

Yea but the disturbing thing is, it was the goofy and hilarious Kago who was breaking the rules with a boyfriend and causing all sorts of problems with the group.
It was Mari who was booted out of the group refusing to give up her boyfriend.
It was Yuko was declared to be a sadist by almost all of the members later on, including herself.
It was Maki who became riddled in personal problems and acted like such a diva that it made it a cutthroat atmosphere.

And talk about spaced out personalities like Iida, Tsuji, Mako, Konno,

It took a long time and many appearances before Mari snapped out of her shell, its called exposure. And for the Old Gen, they had all the airtime to continually prod and bring out these characters.

The new girls now have to deal with the overwhelming reputation of the past and the INSTANT EXPECTATION TO BE COMPLETELY PERFECT.

You missed the part where after 4th gen join, they quickly felt and looked like they had always belonged part of Morning Musume for years. After 5th gen joined, it took them YEARS to really start to not look so "new" in Morning Musume. Don't give me that exposure story because 6th gen and up has had about 6 YEARS to really shine, and they still look as bland as when they started. At least Kago and Tsuji became their own characters and always acted themselves. There is one big thing I hate about the current generation. Fans say the group is the closest that it has ever been but their relationships seem so superficial. They only play nice and criticize each other on trivial matters. Real bonds exist despite acknowledging each other's flaws. It's like a marriage where the husband and wife never fight at all. Are they forced to be this way or are they really so friendly? Either way, it's not a captivating group dynamic. There's no tension at all. It's UNnatural.
