First of all, most of the people who eat rice on daily bases can't simply afford one. Secondly, it's pretty much useless equipment in the first place. I mean, all you have to do is to put some salt in and water in your kettle and let it boil. Even a idiot can do that without a ricecooker. Lastly, when it comes to cooking rice you have to understand that there are various different brand of rice and each one of them has to be cooked in slightly different ways and usually the dish that you're making requires a especially prepared rice. That is not what ricecooker can do, in precise manner. And that is why better restaurants don't simply use ricecookers.

It's not too retarded. If he is living in a dorm, without access to a working range or oven, I don't really see how conventional kitchen cooking is even an option. I used a rice cooker while in a dorm because the only "kitchen" was seven floors down and I would have to supply my own pots, wash them there on the spot and deal with other people who might be using that one kitchen at the same time. Almost always it was hogged by someone baking cookies or some other sweets, never actual food.

I'm really having trouble seeing the advantage of the kettle over a rice cooker in this case when the cost is essentially the same. That's like saying you shouldn't use a coffee maker because you could just use a drip filter and cook the water in a kettle.
