I don't even know if thats it. Vodaphone has suprisingly little to do with what goes on in verizon wireless. I think it has to do more with the spectrum that VZW picked up. Also, keep in mind the 707SCII is somewhat dated by today's standards (released spring 2007) and lacks key features that define a modern japanese phone.

No FeliCa. No QR code. No 1seg.

Other then that it still blows away any peice of shit you'll find in America of course.

Also, SC denotes a Samsung model, hence why its cheaper. A true Japanese brand offers superior build quality and such. That said, I'm cheap, so I only got a 707SCII.

>Other then that it still blows away any piece of shit you'll find in America of course.

Damn right. I currently own the Samsung Sync (I know, i know, cheap base model bullshit) which is decent, but the 707SCII is way slicker than anything I've seen available in America. I had a Blackberry a few months before, but I found all higher end phones in America to be a bit cumbersome, so I stuck with a lower end and more simplistic model. As for functionality, I don't really need my phone to do much, but since I'm in America where I won't be able to utilize all the functions anyways, the argument here is mostly about aesthetics, right?

TL;DR - Japanese phones are slicker and more minimalistic than any of the shit I can find here.

as a general rule:

No AU, as it's CDMA. That leaves docomo and SoftBank along with some smaller carriers (Willcom anyone?)

to use one of docomo and SoftBank's phones in their 3G glory, your country needs to have compatiable WCDMA (and scaling up to HSDPA, etc.) bandwidths. Europe and parts of Asia do, or so SoftBank's roaming materials tell me.

In North America, where the wireless industry is strangled by monopolies and Verizon's crippling CDMAids, WCDMA bands are slightly different then the rest of the world, rendering it useless.

To use a Japanese phone in North America, it must also have backwards compatability with old-fashioned GSM. Many modern WCDMA models do.

Once you locate such a model, note there are two types of "unlock" you can do to use it on your network of choice.

1) Software unlock. a slight change to the phone's firmware disables the carrier check and you can use it as you please. this is easily done on all Samsung models (not true Japanese phones, lower build quality, etc) and a Toshiba or two. examplified by >>557461

2) SIM unlock.this is done by sticking a small chip onto your SIM card. It will unlock almost ANY phone. Issues in stability, crashes, hardware conflicts, reduced functionality may occur. plus, these little motherfuckers are expensive. examplified by >>568625

I don't care how good the phone is. I just want it rectangly and glossy and in a gay color like Japanese phones.

First off, holy shit, this thread's still here from last night?

Thanks for the info. Since I have AT&T, it shouldn't be too hard to find a phone that can be unlocked for my carrier. If all else fails, I can still get this sexy thing >>557461

So have a shitty American telco instead.

They work on the same 3G that's used in europe so technically yes. But you'd have to somehow break the carrier lock on it. And most of it's features would be useless in europe. And don't even think about typing any special characters (á, ä, etc.): in fact, you won't even see them when other people message you.

Frankly, if you want the features, the top Nokia models are better. If you just want something different, the Chinese knock-offs are cheaper.

Bay Area guy here, so I found a place in Chinatown. No DoCoMo. ;_;

troll harder and get the fuck out gook. Take your peices of CDMAids and join the Verizon shill.

>>574019
Yes. provided you can find a willing CDMAids carrier (i.e. Verizon), you can bring your favorite gook handset over. If they won't let you, you'll have to resort to changing or spoofing the ESN of the handset itself.

No. Almost ALL domestic korean phones use CDMA.

They're also dirt cheap due to the massive govt subsidies being the only thing that's keeping the korean economy afloat.

Tell you the truth though, their SKY line of phones are impressive (but can't hold a candle to anything in Japan)
