Well, I've never seen a Dwarf Fortress thread on /jp/ before.

I've never even played Dwarf Fortress, though I go to /tg/ sometimes. I read the tale of Boatmurdered, at least.

I never really understood what all the fuss about this game was. Maybe I should try it.

Those kind of "random-generated" games seems very attractive to me, but it would be better only if the graphics were more advanced.

A bunch of ASCII characters are not attractive to me. Come on! Even Atari games had better graphics...

Yes, you should. It's brilliant. I know some of /jp/ plays Minecraft, and DF shares a few similarities, only DF makes the gameplay of Minecraft seem shallow in comparison.

#1 Erratic, poorly coded personality algorithms result in almost all of your dwarves behaving as if they had a severe neurosis. Rather than fix it, it's been passed off as the typical dwarven mindset.

#2 Incredibly detailed combat/wounds system, which ties into #1 as everyone is fairly likely to start suffering from psychotically homicidal depression for any reason or no reason at all

I chose not to play dwarf fortress because the display is a huge god damned mess and so is the control. If there's any games that NEED to be made 3D, this is one.

Aside from that there isnt much stuff to do, no conquering elven villages no killing human no whatsoever. Digging huge earthscrapers that you can only view one floor at a time isnt my cup of tea.

I started a new fort just yesterday, but the location is shit. No river or brook, no animals. At least I figured out a semi-efficient design to have all my workshops except forges and smelters in one level.

You really should. I started playing Dwarf Fortress as a joke like a week after finishing all the videos. I love WATCHING them videos, but I just wasn't interested in playing DF, but it really is great if you get into it.

It took me a long time to understand z-levels

I remember hearing it mentioned that toady planned on implementing the ability for a combatant grappling with someone who has been disemboweled to choke them with their own intestines

Has that gone live yet?

The whole combat update is done, yes, But the range of actions you can do to opponent's exposed intestines is limited to pinch. So no rip and tear for you.
