How hard is it to find a way to communicate with people without talking? Like, do you guys study other/successful kigs, or the Disney characters at parks and how they deal with different situations? Or do you talk and 'give yourself away'?

...and do you feel like the little girl?

It's hard for me because I only started this year. I can type, but I have to look away from the camera to do it. I'm not very good at the movements yet. Maybe I need to watch more kigurumi videos. I never talk because a kigurumi is never supposed to do that. You also don't say what sex you are even though others can usually tell. That's because kigurumi is more about the character than the person inside. There are movements that we can do to express emotions and say things. Also in front of the camera the movements are like being a model but without the ability to move your face.

Kigurumi covers your body with the character. So you need a zentai, mask, and costume.

I'm still looking for a good place to get a costume made. My last attempt got me a costume that wasn't made right when I tried to buy one off ebay. Maybe /cgl/ would know.

Join the forum at kigurumicosplay.com and there's a mask making tutorial section. From what I've been able to find out, first you buy a lot of clay. Then you wad up newspaper or some kind of padding to make a bigger than head-sized or whatever sized ball. Then you sculpt the mask out of clay around that. You then make a mold out of plaster (?) or silicone (expensive but much easier to remove from the clay and mask material without breaking) I think by layering the material on the inside of the clay where the newspaper was. Then you break the clay and remove it from the mold. When you remove parts from other parts, you put vaseline between them beforehand to make removal easier. On the mold (or is it inside?) you put your vaseline and then you layer down FRP strips and resin. Sometimes the ears are sculpted seperately. There's also different ways of doing the hair. Kawaii hair is stuck to the head, but Wyu has a head ridge to raise the hair and it's removeable. There's a cloth covering over part of the mask opening that goes under the back of your head. The eyes can be made with printed glossy photo paper glued to pieces of plastic. The tongue, if open mouth, can be part of the mask or a piece of pink foam. The eyes have a mesh in the dark area on the top of each eye. On mine, there are slits on the inside of each eye and on the tops. The eyes and anything else are stuck to the inside with putty. There's a mohawk of padding foam inside and also on the face and the sides. To paint on the FRP (before you put on eyes, etc), you need to put on primer and then paint it.

Correct, I somehow doubt many wearing fully concealing attire are in the good-looking-enough-to-selfcombust crowd. But there are many careless smokers, furfag haters, psychos not to mention general carelessness since I wager wearing a bodysuit hardly makes it easy to be wary of your surroundings to warrant the question.

Is it hard to use the bathroom while wearing one? Do some kig performers wear one out of convenience or?

>> No.6415668

I go to the bathroom before I do it and then when I have to go again I have to unzip and take off the zentai/hadatai/tights.

The zipper on my zentai goes from the bottom of my back to the top of the back of my head. It's an "open face" type, which means instead of being closed or having holes, there's a circular opening that leaves a mark after I wear it on my forehead and under my nose. You can put the bottom of the open face under your chin, but it makes the neck wrinkle.

I've never heard of somebody using a diaper. It seems like it would make a baggy lump that would make it obvious to everyone you're wearing one.

When doing kigurumi in public, you have a "spotter" or camera person who leads you around and takes care of everything. Some kigs have an eraseable board to write on.

copying this from the last thread, since it was posted towards the end, and it still sort of relates to the talk of this thread

having a negative mold of your head is a very good idea, quite a few japanese kigs that make their own mask do this. it's the diffference between a generic "one size fits all" and one that actually conforms to your head with no large gaps on the sides. as for the actual coverage of the mask, that can vary too. the minimum is 50% (just the face), which you can attach to your head with straps and clasps. this is probably the best method if you want the mask to fit tight, and also the easiest if you don't know much with wigs, since you can pretty much just use a regular wig this way. the most common is the "3/4", where it goes to right around that bony part on the back of your skull, or a little bit past it. these rest easiest, since they cover all of the top of your head, but depending on how low you have the back can be hard to attach hair to....generally building a mesh on the back helps extend the coverage of the hair. rarest is probably "full head" masks, since these have to be built in 2 pieces, and it can be tricky to create a stable and strong connection between the 2. i've seen several 3/4s masks that have plastic pieces in the back that more or less make the mask a full head mask...usually just used for the case of having hair that's tied up in pony tails or pig tails or whatever.

though wyu's tutorials are the easiest to access because they're in english, the japanese ones cover a lot more stuff, and usually the pictures are enough to get a good idea of what they are doing, if not the exact materials they use.

i think this varies on the relationship between the performer and character. for example, sonya will talk about me, because i am her "master" in a technical sense. she's a doll, given life through me. not very obedient, but she at least recognizes and acknowledges a relationship.

Thanks for the advice.

Wyu's masks are fine, but they definitely don't have the quality of a Sigma mask or the new type of masks that Nukopan makes.

Having a custom-made mask that fits your head shape is hundreds of times better than getting a "one-fits-all" type, so making one that fits me would be my top priority.

There are a lot of tutorials and pictures online that can give you a good idea what to do, I especially like http://www.geocities.jp/nuko003/index.htm since it has a lot of pictures and you can pretty much guess what to do.

there are shortcomings with the kawaii masks, but i love my sonya. i have no sculpting skills to speak of, so i couldn't really make my own mask. though i'd LOVE to buy a mask from ILUCA. i've always loved his masks, and they are tight fitting.

i borrowed an ILUCA mask from a friend, performed some much needed hair maintenance on her.

Yes, it looks pretty good. Fits your body size more than the Kawaii one. I find that the Kawaii masks make the top of your head look a bit shrunken. Perhaps some padding under the wig may help it?

oh yea. Red is a much tighter fit than sonya....very small gaps on the side, while if you look at sonya, she has huge spaces on the sides between my head and her. not exactly something i'm happy with, since she has a tendency to move easily if i move my head too much, but she still stays on even if i try handstands, so not a huge complaint.
