I have a question, /jp/. It seems like whenever I see a thread about vocaloids, there is always a good chunk of posts contributing nothing, insulting others, and pointing to /a/. That, or the thread dies with only a few people contributing. While the first two problems are a given, considering that this is 4chan after all, it still seems to me that vocaloid threads tend to receive an unnatural amount of hate compared to other threads, despite being as /jp/-related as the other things being discussed here. My apologies if I'm seeing this wrong, but could anyone bother to explain why this is?

Most Vocaloid fans don't know shit about the people that make the music and/or they don't listen to albums which makes talking about it kind of difficult.

The only decent places to talk about it IMO is singing robots on LJ and sshado's stream when he actually bothers to show up but that rarely happens.

Sure, I can agree with you two there. Vocaloid is definitely an acquired taste, and I personally enjoy covers over the original songs. Regardless, they help in allowing new composers/producers to create full songs with vocals, even if they have no singing abilities themselves. From there, the songs can take on human vocals, with the many amateur singers there are on nicovideo. If you like a song but dislike the vocaloid singing it, there's almost always an abundance of covers to look at.

Heck, I know several people who are perfectly competent in singing, yet have composed several songs using Miku for the sound of her voice rather than theirs. Luschka is a perfect example. She's covered several of Treow's songs among others, she was the lead vocalist in his album, Reversus, and she's even released her own album, Birth and Foster.

Regardless, she has actually recently started composing songs using Miku rather than her own voice.

Though I can't think of a way to fully explain this myself, I believe it's simply because it's an enjoyable community to be in. Many of the big producers on nicovideo know each other very well, and the community as a whole is incredibly tight-knit. People can experiment with vocaloids, tuning them in different ways to see what sorts of sounds they can make, and they have the experience of watching as the vocaloids themselves begin to grow better and better, approaching the level that human vocals are at. But anyway, that's just my two cents.

Using Vocaloid is a good way to get exposure. All of the big producers weren't very popular musicians until they started using Vocaloid.

Yeah, I suppose that's a large part of the problem with vocaloid threads. An overwhelming chunk of the fanbase is rather horrible... Even then, if new people were willing to get to know what it's all about, then that could possibly help out the threads a bit. As for content, there's certainly enough new songs and covers for a weekly thread to have plenty of things to share. It's just that people actually need to put in the time to search for new stuff rather than relying on others to supply them with music. I suppose that that's easier said than done, though.

And what would this limit be at? Obviously, vocaloids can sing anything Japanese, and any producers who know how phonetics work can make their way around other languages. Sure, they sounds incredibly awkward in other languages, but it certainly doesn't have to be perfect for the time being. After all, vocalists themselves have to learn how other languages work before they're able to sing in those languages.

Vocaloid is universally bad with English. Top of my head the only English Vocaloid song that I really like is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHEK1Oqp1Ck and I can barely understand anything that she's saying.

Well durr. Vocaloid rarely sounds better than a human. I'd rather listen to a human singer than a Vocaloid in most Vocaloid songs. But from a technology stand-point it can be pretty interesting. People need to stop thinking of it as a singing substitute though. It's more like a digital instrument that kind of sounds like a person.

Eh, not a huge fan of those two. I've never liked their voices very much, and most producers that I enjoy rarely use them anyway, so Kaito and Meiko are usually pushed to the back when I'm searching for new stuff. The Rin/Len appends should be interesting, though. Rin's voice was decent, and several of the appends sound pretty nice. Though I hadn't liked Len's voice in the past, it's beginning to grow on me, and the append seems to also improve on its sound.

>>6707176
Yeah, I'll give you that one. With the program as it is currenty, there really isn't too much to curb their odd pronunciations in songs. I personally tend to look over those problems, though, since lyrics aren't very important in my mind. The inspiration and creativity behind songs are what causes me to enjoy them the most.

I don't believe that was the point the other person was getting at. Digital instruments exist to allow people to create harmonies and supporting parts without enlisting actual people to play the instruments for them. While they certainly aren't as good as a live instrument, they get somewhat close to the real thing. Heck, I doubt people would realize that the strings in this song are synthed if they didn't know about it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MevWZXPWANc
Singing substitutes or not, vocaloids exist to allow people to create melodies at their computers. As with digital instruments, they're far from being perfect, but they're still handy in their own way.

With every niche interest, you're gonna have vocal people who insist that their preferences in regard to the subject are superior and therefore everyone else's opinions are invalid.

I think vocaloid fans should get along, but it's kind of like asking /v/ or /a/ to get along. There are a lot of different groups and subgroups and tastes in regard to vocaloid, so there will always be disagreement.

All vocaloid fans are good vocaloid fans except for the fucking UTAU roleplayers who contribute nothing and don't even listen to the music and only serve to fill up the wiki with Mary-Sue shit. Seriously, those fuckers need to disappear or somehow branch off away from the vocaloid fandom and stop associating themselves with us.

Calling Vocaloid mainstream is probably overexaggerating it, but it's certainly getting there. The big producers are beginning to amass quite a large following over on nicovideo, and they're also gaining tons more english-speaking fans as well lately. The fact that it's gaining recognition on magazines and talkshows is a result of this, and those may spark even more interest in the program.

>>6707362
Admittedly, I tend to categorize Vocaloid fans a lot. There are the facebook groups and various forums that do nothing but repost the "classics" over and over and over while obsessing over pictures, pairings, and the vocaloids themselves. Then there's the more knowledgeable group of people who know a decent amount of information about the producers and what's going on in nicovideo. Sadly, there aren't a whole lot of people in the second category, in my opinion.
