Are downloaders a type of secondary?

If ZUN digitally distributed his shit he might have made loads of money, but japan seems to have this obsession with material possessions.

No offence but are you from /v/ or something?
Of course the physical form matters, otherwise you are basically paying for air.

There is no collector's value in "nothing". That way you might as well pirate it.
/jp/ is the kind of folks who easily pays twice the normal price for limited edition and such, because it is special. One can place it somewhere and then you -have- it.

That's all fine and dandy until a talented developer stops making games because there's no motivation.

No one said people aren't buying.
As for myself I use most of all my income outside of basic necessities such as food and housing on such stuff as it is what lies in my interest.
But really, no physical copy? Then nothing from me.
But I have my shelves full of physical copies of whatever.

In either case, my economy doesn't exactly allow anything more.

I really don't mind "paying for air" if it's a game that I'll enjoy only once or twice, as long as the price is adequate. Hell my steam and impulse accounts together are worth at least $500. But for franchises I love, Touhou being my best example, I must buy the physical copy. I see it much more as an way of showing respect towards the devs than anything else. Specially for doujin/indie games when, most of times, are made by people who actually like making games(it's not just their breadwinner).

BTW, pic is my Touhou game collection. All the windows games and some derivated doujin including the glorious touhouvanias and megamari. I also have all the official books and some figures(all Komachi, Yamaxanadu from griffon and 4 Yukaris(including a custom colored, very rare GK), waiting for chen and ran). Don't own any doujinshi's or music CDs(touhou music is too agitated for me). But I live in Japan and I'm not a neet so getting touhou goods is not that hard/expensive at all. If I went back to russia or america (my childhood nations) I think I would torrent everything. If you live overseas and buy your stuff I would take my ZUN hat for you.

>> No.6809264

>>6809247

110% agreed, and nope, not jelly at all. That is a very nice collection. I would eat off my own leg for those 'Touhouvania' discs. Not really a related question, but are those floors comfortable?

somewhat...

I still need to get my hands on DS, Fairy Wars, PoFV, and the fightan games, otherwise I have the rest.

No idea. I'm getting Fairy Wars soon though, mostly because it was the cheapest of them to get and I don't get too much money.

Practical? Hell no. Very difficult to clean, very fragile and you have to exchange them every 5~7 years(it's been 6 years since I moved here, so it's time)

That is what you get for owning an ipod. As a former walkman owner that is my biggest complain. But this ipod is my first but also my last apple product. Getting an walkman again next time, I don't need those shitty "apps".

I'm with /jp/ on most points, but I simply can't understand this mentality that seemingly values the medium over the experience itself. Does this (ultimately false, might I add) sense of ownership really mean that much in the end?

Would you go up to your favorite game developer and tell him "hey, I'm your biggest fan, I torrented all your games! Could you sign my external drive?"?

>> No.6809454

>>6809384
Many /jp/ers value the sense of "collections".
That in turn may very well not be a healthy thing.
Be it social anxiety or full blown autism, /jp/ does seem to have something.

But yes it matters. You know of those people who don't even break the seal on their products for the collector's value? Yeah, it is sort of the same mindset, only on a higher than average level.
Then of course, if possible and if affordable, duplicates for simply having and for use is of corse the ideal, but these types are far more rare.

There's probably a lot of otaku brainwashing involved. A lot of the big anime and game developers know that they target demographic are people known for being obsessive about their hobbies, so there's a lot of money to be made just convincing their consumers that they should collect everything. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they sent people to 2ch to bully people who don't buy everything related to their favorite franchise.

I view many of the things I own as an investment. For example, if I ever needed a couple thousand dollars in a pinch, I could always sell my Back to the Future MUSE discs.

>> No.6809505

>>6809348
Yes I do. Just not interested. I'm actually selling this ipod very soon and jailbraking doesn't add a lot for a guy who mostly just listens to music. Walkmans let you transfer files using any OS as long as it has a file explorer(I use linux frequently), have better sound, less bloat, better battery life and far less DRM(can even connect on any computer and copy files). I also knew the issues with ipods and itunes before buying. I knew what kind of mine I was stepping on. I justed want to see what all this fuzz about apps was all about(I even jailbroke it once to see what was available on cyndia).

I also think its important to mention that iTunes is just for sync-ing and casual music shopping. I use foobar and vlc for my media playback needs. Looks like I took the picture during the wrong time and made me look like an Apple tool.

Excellent argument.

>>6809454
Steam only users may not understand why we like collecting those games, but I 'm pretty sure they are also pride (or ashamed) of their steam "collection". Also I've never saw a person who doesn't like collecting some kind of stuff. Unless it's extremely compulsive I wouldn't call it disease, but instead, typical human behavior.

Pic is the model I'm planning to buy (just wating a refresh due soon). But I agree with you. Sony should create a new brand for their modern PMP line, ASAP. I think one of the reasons they don't sell better in the US/EU is exactly because of this.

>> No.6809827

>>6809596

Same here. A good balance is best.

I would also say downloaders really aren't secondaries if they truly care about the work, and would purchase it if they had the means.

>> No.6810860

I really find it funny how everyone goes "Oh no! You are killing the inddustry! Please somebody think of the industry!" whenever someone mentions someone downloading something.
There is a huge difference beetween pirating, and never paying for anything, pirating and paying decently, and pirating and paying as much as possible.

Also, why do people always assume that people who download things are interested enough to buy them? Isn't that kind of profound to think? I mean, why would one think so? What arguments would one have?

But yeah, things you really like really should be in proper physical form, it is the way that feels best.

>> No.6810863

I only have SA and UFO. I was planning to start with the newer games and work down, but it's expensive. $40 per game? I don't have that kind of money, unfortunately.
