fags japanese isn't a hard language. I never took courses formally, only memorized the alphabet, watched subbed anime, and grinded some grammar a little. Some kanji or phrases occur so fucking often you will instantly recognize it the second time around. Machine translations is good for some complex words, but some games are fuck annoying for machine translations. Imagine japs using english machine translations: "what" will be translated 何, but whaaat?whhat? will probably come out as giberish, and considering how much words tail off for verbal effect and colloquialism in games, learning some basic japanese including listening make reading VNs quite easy, right now i don't ever wait on translations, pretty much read whatever the fuck i want, and cruise at auto-mode speed for most VNs with very good accuracy and understanding. Well worth the small investment, last you forever derp. translations is a thankless job and no one in the fucking mind will dedicate time properly without incentive, so enjoy your wait.

machine translations is not exactly shakespear, and if you know the grammar, common dialogs, you can piece together the meaning and context very easily and quickly. with the alphabet you can sound out transliterate engrish words yourself, moreover makes searching up words substantially easier knowing how to divide a sentence into individual components.

probably so i guess in some circumstances, however i am interested in the content... not so much the language, japanese is just the medium in which we gain access to more content typically unavailable to most of us. if you're blindly 'search and go' then you won't learn anything. I read kinda slow for my first few VNs with some degree of frustration, but now i can read out a lot of sentences straight off knowing a lot of common verbs, nouns I had search and noted before- and knowing what i just said too of course. If i am searching up anything, its usually kanji or some verb i don't know... but I would already know pretty much the entire context and most of the sentence, so its just filling in the blanks for 1 or 2 things; in the process, if i encounter the same noun/verb a few times more I would've memorized it by then. Maybe I forgot some of the things i did, but I only recalled doing this much. I can read, listen and speak to a certain degree. I have enough understanding to laugh at all the jokes except the puns, as well as feeling the atmosphere from the narration.

The story itself I can understand everything, minus a few lines that i cannot never figure out though it hardly affects the context. By then I would just ditch the line, since I could also somewhat discern the importance of a particular line towards the story. To which I pet myself in the back for, or perhaps I am being conceited about my ability but I believe I learned the language to some degree. Either way, I ended up not needing translations, i now pick VNs based on my own interest not based on what's translated. I basically learn enough to read, not so much to continually build on my japanese skills. Its a method that worked for me.

worst case I would start with nukiges or less serious story lines to avoid sacrifice too much speed, maybe even moeges though i hate that genre. They're all rather simplistic and similar to get in repetition for practice.

Calling Ushimirai generic isn't really accurate. It has two great immense route in the end which elevates it over eroge which really ARE generic. Then add to that the art, the sempai, yui, and there we go. If that's generic to you, I don't want to see what you count as bad.

Translators and hackers should team up to make software that is able to somewhat accurately translate. All that would need to be done is getting the scripts, running the software to produce the translated text in a certain file format, and reinserting. That would be badass. I can dream, can't I :_:
