"Unoriginality" is, at best, a meaningless criticism in a world where the written word has existed for countless thousands of years.The novelty of originality only holds any meaning for unread people whose understanding of the themes, tropes, and narrative structure is limited only to the tiny, incomprehensibly small set of stories and ideas that they've personally been exposed to in their fleetingly small life time

I agree with this. It's one thing to use certain creatures (vampire, kappa, oni, etc.) as a basis for making a character, but ZUN pretty much took Kaguya directly from the original tale where she appeared (from the moon, her looks, her backstory) so there's not a lot unique about her at all. I know it was deliberate, but still.

Personally, I don't dislike her, but she's hardly my favourite character either.
