Is there any reason you're using an overly narrow DOF? It seems too thin to keep anything interesting in focus. Either that or you're overcompensating for insufficient lighting. If you frequently find yourself holding your aperture wide open just to get a decent exposure that's usually the case.

That's because it's not bokeh you're achieving. If there's no aesthetic property to the intentionally blurred area, then it's just an intentionally blurred area.

Forgot to mention I assume you're using the 50mm 1.4 on a crop sensor camera. If that's the case it sounds like midrange glass is within reach. You might want to check out the 28mm 1.8 (~$500) and invest in a multi-angle flash like the 430EXII (<$300)

The 28mm can get in as close as 8-9 inches and with the crop factor it has a field of view similar to 50mm on a full frame camera. Since it's a wider angle lens it has a deeper depth of field but the maximum aperture of 1.8 still allows the lens to create some great bokeh.

tl;dr great for candids and dolls, pic related.

Quite a while, actually- but on /jp/ all I can recall is Kordox has some 1/6, Xordox has an Airi? and there's Rukitron with two DDs- a Mai and a 04 head... but I haven't been around for a couple months. Congrats on landing a Sakuya.

I have an 03 head. I can't seem to figure out what body to put her on though. I wanted a DDS but I'm not willing to pay LE aftermarket for the body. I've owned a DD2 and broke it, while Volks replaced the broken part, I was displeased and sold it. Now I may be leaning towards Obitsu 50cm-- I dislike the shape of the joints but the body itself isn't unpleasant and seems to have good posability.

Oh, I have an Obitsu 11cm too, but she's kind of flimsy. That definitely gives me pause towards getting a 50cm too. I'd like to have her complete by Christmas though...

I think it's a plain issue of taste. However i think there's still a bias rooted in gender:

"Normal" BJDs resemble things our mothers may have collected and locked away in glass cases and unless we also collect tiny glass elephants, crystal and china, we rarely develop an interest in them now unless we were fascinated with them then.

New generation BJDs such as DD/Azone/Obitsu are akin to action figures and pvc figurines and seem to target the same male target audience that are enamored with the popular moe characters the doll manufacturers choose to license and model their originals after.

of course, exceptions always apply

(male obviously, as if the obscene level of gadgetry wasn't evident)

Hey Xodrok, what's your opinion between the 28 2.8 and the plastic fantastic for dolls?

>> No.8067626

>>8067293
That's a tough question since results are subjective. Also, I have the 28mm 1.8, 28mm 2.8 and the 50mm 1.4 but not the 50mm 1.8 so I can speak for being familiar with the exact focal lengths but not the exact experience.

This is going to sound counter intuitive but I think the wider 28mm is better suited for doll photography and here's why:

1. Wide angle also means wider depth of field - even wide open you get more of the subject in focus
2. You can get almost twice as close to a small subject with a wider lens
3. On most camera bodes which have a 1.6x crop factor, the field of view is almost like 50mm
4. You can do scenic shots like Azure_toy_box
These photos were all taken with a 28mm lens:
>>8052466
>>8052423
>>8052300
>>8046880
>>8042811
>>8039192

However the plastic fantastic (50mm 1.8 I assume) is not without its merits

1. You can do headshots
2. You can shoot in lower light
3. Superior background blur and bokeh when shot wide open
4. the tight field of view is well suited for portrait-style photos

Fortunately both are relatively inexpensive, so why not get both?

Also take a look at the 50mm 2.5 compact macro if you're interested in getting close like in these shots

She's so pretty. I don't think I like the rooted hair though.

In other news, I found out today that my DD03 will be going on a DDII body. I had asked for an Obitsu 50cm for christmas, but since DD2 is cheaper, that's what I'm getting.

and a laptop.

so I can't really complain.

Thanks for the long write up.
I tried out 2 macro lenses and I believe the true 1:1 from the EF-S 60mm 2.8 USM makes more sense

You should get a fantastic plastic anyway. It's great.

You can always look in to adapters for older manual lenses on your DSLR body as well, if autofocus isn't important. Going that route is really cheap.

What he said, it's only a hundred bucks, which is less than an Azone or a Volks outfit before conversion rate and EMS.

Not to mention, doll or not it's a great lens to have overall.

Looking at the past three months of YJ auctions for her, between 251,000 and 350,000 yen.

I had the opportunity to go for her when VOLKS put her up for lottery but never entered. Kinda regret that now.

Several times a year when they release a new doll they sell via lottery system.

Volks is not a retail supplier with mass-produced product and their demand exceeds their supply capability.

With the exception of the inner frames and common body parts, a significant amount of their product are hand-made (clothes, accessories) and manufactured in short runs (heads) to match the available hand-made supply.

However, this fall Volks has done something new. Saber 2nd Alter and Extra (their 4th and 5th variants) were offered on open preorder which resulted with such an overwhelming demand that within a week a second ship date for the middle of next year needed to be announced to accomodate the additional demand.

tl;dr apply when they're released and if you win, you pay. The lotto system curbs demand and fosters long term interest.

Rumor is that Sasara and Tamaki will be re-released in the upcoming Dollpa. Not confirmed by a credible source so take it with a grain of salt.

Those two are highly sought after since they look really good. I already have one so a re-release doesn't benefit me really.

>Don't forget that the Sabers aren't the only web orders though.

true that, in addition to lotto, some were just put up in the web store after being announced. This is the first time they've done preorder though.
