There is nothing inherently wrong with this, but it's like the MUGEN of music games, and I simply can not take it seriously.

>How is that "reminding you of everything bad in the Western bemani community"?
I have nothing against that specific link (well, I kinda do, but that's beside the point), but it reminds me of how many complete garbage simfiles there are out there. This isn't to say all official games have perfect charts, but the kinds of charts that a majority people made from yesterdecade are enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth for years to come.

StepMania is as hard as you want it to be. You can get the official notecharts if you want. The difficulty of other simfiles you get will depend on the creator. Both pad and keyboard charts exist. As for the quality of them, see >>8364443 and >>8364466.

Stepmania's files are all user-created. Because of this, it actually tends to lean much more towards the difficult side, since the most enthusiastic players are simultaneously the most skilled and the most likely to create stepfiles.

Also, stepmania really shouldn't be compared to DDR at all. Most people I knew played on the keyboard. It's more fun than it sounds.

>> No.8364812

I remember the programs that tried to "automagically" generate notes. What a nightmare. I guess it works for Audiosurf or whatever but the beauty of StepMania is its finely-crafted simfiles.

Also the official DDR simfiles have been ported over. Aimed at pads, obviously, but songs like the MAX series are great for getting into using a keyboard well.

Stepmania thread on MY /jp/?

Fuck yes. i play every day for over a year now. It all started with some shitty soft mat and DDR 7th mix for PS2 i bought for shits and giggles. been hooked ever since.
i finally upgraded from a foam pad to a metal one too. I'm still having a hard time getting used to the recessed arrows though.

Any veterans have some tips for the transition for me?

Since i saw a few people asking:

What exactly is your problem with them?
Recessed arrows make playing alot easyer because you can always tell exactly where you're standing.

Indeed they are. In the "compared to other user-made packs" sense, that is. There's quite a bit of crap in each, but there are also some brilliant charts, easily better than most of the official ones.

I play IIDX just about every day. Well, I should say I play Lunatic Rave 2 just about every day, but that's because I'm American and it's pretty much the only way. Luckily I was one of the people who bought the PS2 American home version, so I've got the controller that came with that that I can use.

nice~ a stepmania thread in here~
been playing it for around 1 year, started with keyboard, because there are no arcades in where i live and buying a pad from some out of country place is annoying as hell... by now, i got a pad, though a soft one, slides around the floor when playing, but nothing a bit of duct-tape can't fix eh~

They're obviously better, but if you don't really need the stability their weight provides, there's no reason to switch. Personally, I'm not intending to "dance" to the especially difficult and contrived crap that requires a bar and the use of special tricks to complete anyway, so I'm perfectly fine with my foam one.

And the difference isn't that big, they just need to be gotten used to. If you can dance on foam, you'll be doing just as well on metal with a small bit of practice. Probably no more than a few songs.
