I am personally not that much of a fan of Minecraft, but I must say it's very much deserving of praise because of its influence. Not only did it attract a lot of attention to indie games, it also set the standards for games where crafting and building are main elements such as Terraria (which I would personally consider game of the year).

Worse is, there is no real "freedom". There is just a lack of a strong linear narrative or course of events.

Whether you do A>B>C>D>E>F>G or whether you do B>C>D>F>G>E and choose not to do A, doesn't change the fact that the content is there and the only real choice is "do it" or "do not do it".

In fact, I'd say that these so-called "free" games actually are less free than games with a tighter narrative. The reason being, so few of them contain any actions which dramatically reshape the game world. Thus, you're basically free to do actions nearly all of which don't really matter that much for the game world (few dialogue line changes, people murmuring about things, etc).

However, in a more linear narrative, you can make bigger sweeping changes, provided the author cared to include proper divergence from the original world state.

Basically, there are "freedoms from" and "freedoms to". Games like Skyrim offer a lot of "freedoms from" but finite and shallow "freedoms to". I always thought it was hilarious to call Skyrim "deep". The game is the opposite. It has extreme breadth, but it has extremely little depth in any direction.
