Anyone else have authentic katanas or live in households with them on display?

As of today, my house has three. My dad bought them when he took a week long vacation in China. I was a little skeptical at first since I had bought a few fakes a few years ago from various vendors.

My dad assures me that they're real though, saying that he bought them off of Chinese veterans of WWII and the Japanese occupation. I've also checked; at least one of the blades indeed has a real edge.

I have a machete my grandpa used to kill Japs with. It is ridiculously fucking rusty. I'm waiting for someone to try to break into my apartment so I can chop at them with it and give them tetanus or something.

That’s it. I’m sick of all this “Masterwork Bastard Sword” bullshit that’s going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I’m talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that’s about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I’m pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That’s right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)

1d12 Damage

How much did your father pay for his katanas?

>> No.848910

I have katanas, but they're low carbon stainless steel crap.

>> No.848920

Yes, I do, I bought them for about $50 online. They can cut through water bottles easily.

>> No.848926

before anyone asks katanas make a vacuum in space and could cut a tank in half

I have 3 bokken, a shinai, and a wakizashi w/ a busted sheath

>> No.848943

A real katana is insanely expensive.

Thousands upon thousands of dollars, and yes, they take a really long relative time to make.

>> No.848954

I'd like even a really cheap one just to have, but can't bring myself to waste the money on it.

Maybe a bokken...

We have several in my household that were given to my grandfather during the Japanese occupation. They have been appraised from a ~$500 to ~$25,000. The lower end ones are a pair of officer swords (I'm guessing) and the higher end ones I have no clue on. All 5 pieces are on display and in perfect condition.

Flea market.

I got one of my shitty katanas there for cheap.

don't hit anything with it. It likely has a thin welded tang on it, and you stand a good chance of breaking the handle off.

That doesn't seem to be much of an issue, but it did chip when I cut a CD case with it.

The navite jappos just gave it to him? Or did he take them by force?

Don't beat on tables with it.

depending on how bad the chip is you need to do repair work or ditch the blade (if a CD case did this ditching sounds good, as it sounds like shitty metal). a chip in the blade can shatter the blade on a second contact and you really don't want to go to the hospital because of a cheap fleamarket knock off.

Or just don't hit things with your cheap ornamental sword anymore and keep it around as decoration.

They were given by native Japanese. I was told who gave what ages ago, but I do not remember anymore.

>> No.849017

Yeah, the thing just sits in its sheath as decoration now.

Its probably been 2+ years since I last took it out.
