>You grabbing the updated 24-70? The price isnt very appealing without IS
Yeah, oddly the long lens still has no IS but their refreshed 24 and 28mm lenses do. For me it's a pass, I already have the 24-105 F4L IS and the 16-35 F2.8L so I have the range covered and wider, add my fisheye to the mix and my wide-angle/general purpose needs are covered.

What I'm presently shopping for are fast medium/long lenses:
EF-S 60mm 2.8 macro for short tabletop shooting (I love the 100mm 2.8L but would like something a tad wider)
EF 85mm 1.8 (faster than above but not as sharp)
and for my PEN:
Olympus 45mm F1.8
Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm f1.4

Still haven't picked a name for my 06. I considered going with a Japanese name but it would be completely meaningless so I'm mulling over some Anglo ones now. "Ginger" or "Cindy" seems to work for the present look.

>EF 85mm 1.8 (faster than above but not as sharp)
I originally passed on the 85 1.8 over to the sigma 50 1.4 I own now due to it's heavy purple/green fringing problems. It's a dated lens but for its price it's arguable that its strengths (pretty much everything else) outweighs its sole weakness (correcting green halos was not fun).

Overrated. At least to me it feels the same next to my DSLRs. Depending on the lens it may even be worse. the 17mm pancake likes to bounce back and forth at least once. But the kit zoom is on par with any USM lens

>seems to be a niche right now but it can eat up the entry level DSLR segment
They're exactly as every review describes: niche/conveniently sized/step up from compact but cannot replace a DSLR.
If marketed well, they can eat up new sales of D3100s and Rebels given the simliar price point.

Unfortunately I think unless there's a lot of press, advertising and promotion, consumers will just go right on shopping their retail selections. You really need to be an engadgeteer or enthusiast to be informed about them. I like them because they're more discreet at bars and concerts.

So I got this new wig from Volks the other week for my 06, and I can't get over how much different this wig is from the other Volks wigs I've had including my unused Nanoha wigs. This one's so much finer, softer and fluffier. Must be because it's a much lighter color. Maybe that's why I see a lot of dolls with fair hair, aside from the threat of staining they seem to possess a finer texture and feel. Lilia's silver hair also seems to be fine by comparison to my darker wigs.

Anyway, I chose a name, Ginger.

basically since it's not a zoom lens the bottom slider won't work but you can see the sharpness change as you move the aperture slider on the left. the units are "blur units" the closer to bottom, the sharper, The tested sample moves away from bottom once you pass F11.

So having never bought any Dollfie Dream before I have a question.

On Ebay there is a seller selling several limited run dolls on average between $1200 and $1800.

I know these things have an insane retail value due to the "scarcity" of the character dolls, but is this an extortionate price range or a genuine one that most collectors pay (assuming they don't get the doll for original retail value when it gets released).

Also, if I was interested in buying future character DD dolls, how do you know when they are going to be released? Are there pre orders?

Having personally sold 1 limited Dollfie Dream for $1450 on eBay which was about $750 retail I can say people do pay a lot for then on the 2nd hand market.

But with how often new DDs come out it is kind of silly to pay that much. Check the Volks USA blog (blog.volksusa.com) for announcements on pre-orders or lottery entry times for new releases. You can also buy from the Volks international site which releases them a few months earlier than what the USA site gets but you may end up paying more for shipping.

>between $1200 and $1800 // is this an extortionate price range or a genuine one

Since price is subjective I suggest you shop around, $1800 is high for me but your financial situation is probably different. You might see the same for sale on YJA for 125K Yen (~$1600) but after factoring deputies you may end up paying more. FYI if it's a recently released doll, I usually seem them on Yahoo starting at 60k yen. if it's a coveted doll they will definitely hit the prices you listed.

>if I was interested in buying future character DD dolls, how do you know when they are going to be released? Are there pre orders?
I camp Volks international and US sites as well as Azone's blog. If something is coming, they'll announce who and when. Because of their limited nature, purchase is available by lotto. and the rest is tearfully parting with your money.

Fair market price differs depending on which doll. You'll have to find out the market value first, but ebay is usually overpriced. Yahoo JP Auctions is a better place to get them, but there is a hurdle of needing a middleman to help you bid (Rinkya, SMJ, etc.) and the issue of exchange rate. Prices on there generally reflect true market value.

As far as future dolls go, you will just have to wait for announcements. Volks only announces the next one in line. If you keep up with doll communities you'll be able to hear about it. The next upcoming ones were posted in the previous doll thread, go check there.

Definitely put together.
Dollfie Dreams have very few original characters. Aside from like Yukino and Aoi, the rest are all image characters based on some character from an anime / manga / VN. That one is MDD by the way.

Parts-wise it's only really a custom head + eyes, wig, body, and clothes.

I can't help but think that buying dolls goes beyond the line of sanity. I used to think the same about PVC figs before I bought my first Griffons, but dolls just seem to be a whole different dimension.

>> No.8583921

>I can't help but think that buying dolls goes beyond the line of sanity. I used to think the same about PVC figs
I was sort of like that. When I used to do garage kits circa 2003/2004 the resin super dollfies was "that other thing some people are starting to do" but the stories of grown men taking them everywhere in cases/tupperware painted a disturbing picture of their male demographic. At that time, for me it was "end of story". Fast forward to '09 and a fellow GKer started to get into them, and that's when I discovered the more appealing anime-styled vinyl ones. Nanoha was released and now here we are having this conversation.

>because you appreciate its aesthetic quality and enjoy using your photo studio?
lol desks and cardboard sheets, but studio aside, photography seems to be a halo hobby to dolls. The dolls are photogenic and as you can see several of us have answered the siren's call for expensive photo gear. Some of us have even spent more on camera gear than dolls. If only my composition skills came close to my buying ability.

Yeah I was sort of like this, but with figures. I saw so many great pics on MFC, so I started researching DSLR cameras.

"So... I'm going to need about $600 for a starter DSLR camera, maybe I'll get some props and a nice backdrop..."

Then I realized that I didn't buy figs to take pictures of them.

Scary shit.

Currently most of my salary goes toward saving for a house, but enough is left over for hobbies like Dollfies (when Nero and Alter2 arrive I’ll have nine), the odd cel or genga, figurine and a new lens.

Also posts like the ones above show that once again /jp/ is full of professionals and levels of irony.

Woot, Volks USA had the DDII white body in stock so I had to order one for my new DDH-06 along with some other goodies. Unfortunately the tenshi-no-hair brush was out of stock. Keeping the wigs nice sure is a pain.

The tenshi-no-hair brush is basically a soft bristled toothbrush with a pointy handle (for poking those stray strands of hair down). A toothbrush will work just fine until they come back in stock. I also found that the wig oil spray to be a big help.

From Volks I have DD Nanoha, DD Kotori and DDH-06. I used to have Mari and Kyoko (pic related) but they sort of left something to be desired. Then of course there's the Saber preorder waiting for fulfillment.

>reccomend i order to have on hand

1. Initially I thought "I need a stand" but i don't use it often, it's not the best stand though. I'm sure a leg stand, saddle stand or stand that can be hidden under skits would have disappointed me less. Pic related, it adjusts for height and goes around the waist. It's as basic as it gets. Easily there's better ones out there.

2. Posing tends to mes up the hair frequently so haircare is a good start. It'll be good to have brushes, combs, etc. on hand to keep things straight. Volks has their stuff but i wonder how much of that can be substituted. ie I use their oil mist but I also use water in a spray bottle when it's not warranted. I wonder if watering down spraygel would be OK too but I imagine I'd be washing the wig from the buildup. Also I use a full sized comb but i should probably use a smaller one with shorter teeth so i don't get greedy with the combing, Doll hairs are plastic fibers and if they're yanked they get tangly. The last 2-3 inches of my Nanoha wig are a wreck thanks to reckless combing. I also started using a toothbrush to style around the face.

3. Clothes clothes clothes! no need to explain it! clothes!

4. if you're willing, because it's not mandatory, a camera to spread the joy and foster interest from the scrollers :)

- a Stand
- Wigs, Wig Cap, Eyes, Eyeputty or equivalent
- Hands

Like Xodrok said, clothes.
Not sure where to get good ones though. A lot of the nice ones pop up at Dollpa or other events so your best bet is either the official Volks releases or places like YJA.

I went on a lens spree and got the EF-S 60mm F2.8, and the 45mm F1.8 for the m43.

What's funny is I sold my EF 28mm 1.8 to help fund one of the other purchases but in less than a day I was like "damn that was my APS-C 'normal' lens" so I bought another lol. People do it all the time :) You shouldn't have problems - see left

>>8611574
I like the first one better but mainly because the flash isn't obvious, in the second one, the white balance is more neutral, but the flash overpowered the room light and cast a shadow that detracts from Kanade-chan's silhouette :( That's not your fault, though, art mode disables a few settings and goes full auto (at least it does on mine)

The white Obitsu bodies match the DD normals.

Mounting a DD head on an Obitsu isn't that hard as long as you have some bolts/etc available. Or you could buy an Obitsu<->DD neck mount off Y!J.

I personally just took some spare Ikea screws I had around and easily got the head on. :)
