Greetings /jp/. I don't usually come here, but I've recently taken an interest in Japanese culture (mainly anime).

My question is: I've come to understand that the suffix ''-san'' is used to refer to males whereas ''-chan'' is used for females. Why is Jackie chan not called Jackie san then?

I could go into length about memorphic linguistic changes between Chinese, Cantonese, and Japanese, but basically the answer is he isn't Japanese. In Japan he is of course called Jackie-San, (San meaning 3 for the 3 male virtues) and Bruce Lee is called Bruce-3.
