Stepmania is kind of Otaku Culture, I guess.
Anyone know of any decent SongPack repositories besides:

Came across this a while ago:
http://otakusdream.com/old/touhoumix/1stmix.htm
Not sure how good it is.

I still think /jp/ should create a simfile pack. It would be a good (and easy to collaborate on) project. Not to mention one we might actually finish.

>> No.8973944

Not anime/jp related but there's a heap here.

Nice! These look insane, thanks.

How long did it take you all to get good at Stepmania?
Right now I can't beat any song with a rating of higher than 10, which happens to be the majority of every song pack I've downloaded so far.

Playing stepmania by myselfmakes me feel more shame han stimulating my prostate to loli

I'm too fat to play these games

Same with me.

I manged to beat the gravitation song in one of those otaku dream anime packs. I think the first pack.
But the touhou pack is just dumb. All the songs only have hard modes that are 12+. how the fuck do you even play those? it's too tightly condensed to even read the arrows

>> No.8974034

>>8973995
If you're using a keyboard, use two fingers.

>> No.8974040

>>8974034
that would be wrong. A lot of the songs can't even be played with feet actually. You need all 4 fingers to play them since they would have a hold note and a jump at the same time, then a roll right after.

Bind one of the arrows to another place you can reach with your free hand. Then use one finger from your offhand, and three fingers on your main hand to play.

STEPmania, and you can't play the majority of the songs with your feet.

>> No.8974041

>>8974034

I use three fingers, but one hand. Is two hands, two fingers the way to go?
At that point, I might as well just give up and go learn piano.

>> No.8974046

ur mom likes it when i use 2 fingers, bitch.

>> No.8974050

>>8974041
piano is 88 keys with both hands and five fingers on each, with each hand in charge of eight notes per scale.
Nowhere close.

>> No.8974052

>>8974040
>>8974041
Oh fuck I meant two hands (with two fingers on each). My bad.

But seriously, I used to play with my two index fingers and wondered why I could never get good at the keyboard packs. Then after a short learning curve with four fingers it became a lot easier.

Speaking of piano and rhythm games:
http://www.synthesiagame.com/
Pretty sure this supports standard MIDI files, so it might be fun to play Touhou songs (depending on how they are arranged).

Ehm. You should get your hands on CyberiaStyle 6.

It has advanced C-Modifications that go up to C700. C-Mods space the buttons out at the cost of making them scroll by faster.

>> No.8974417

>>8974395
I used to play every song on like C300 or whatever.

It's funny, you'd think making the steps "go faster" would be more difficult, but it's a lot easier. I struggle like hell with slow steps, and I suspect that from a game/input point of view the window of opportunity for each rating is narrower.

I was going to recommend you play Stepmania Online but it seems that the official server got taken down about two months ago due to lack of funding.

>>8974041
There are a lot of good one hand players as well as two hand players, one hand is expectedly more difficult because of the transitions you have to sometimes make when holds, crossovers, or jumpstream occur, but there is no real wrong way to play. Spread is probably the fastest way to learn to play harder files, with your index and middle fingers on each hand being assigned for one arrow (in one example, Z=Left X=Down Period=Up Slash=Right).

All y'all talking bad about playing Stepmania on the keyboard need to stop living in the stone age.

we had an eccentric girl named mandy start this site: http://www.stepmaniadirectory.com/

also most of our simfile packs are here: http://www.otakusdream.com/news/

>Stepmania Online

Isn't that built into the client now? Like you just enter someone else's IP address and boom! Netplay.

>> No.8974541

yes you can still locally play against another player via IP or private server if someone actually sets one up, but for many, many years you could connect to stepmaniaonline.us (or eu) and be connected to the official server with multiplayer.

>> No.8974552

>>8974541
I thought that had its own client though? Like a fork of StepMania, then they integrated it?

I mean, ultimately you're playing against another player, right? Did it give you a list of players waiting for a game or something?

>> No.8974544

Most of the OtakuDream charts are pretty shitty and boring.

>> No.8974566

>>8974544
I figured as much. I played a few and they were okay, but I haven't played this properly in ages so I didn't trust my own judgment.

They've re-launched their site and I couldn't find this pack on it, so maybe they were unsatisfied with how it turned out.

>> No.8974570

makes me sad that I can't actually play online anymore. I didn't even realize the official servers were down. there weren't very many people that played there anyway.

>> No.8974571

no, there was never a separate client for online play and a separate client for regular play, if I understand you correctly.

in stepmaniaonline, you type the name in, start the game, enter a username and password, and join a room (created by a host player). The host chooses the songs he or she wants to play (typically everyone else joining the room has the same packs so everyone can play) and song playing commences. After the song is over your score is displayed along with everyone elses scores. In later updates to the server options were set that so that anyone could choose songs based on how the room was set up in the beginning.

I think in-game it opens up a few more frames to get the timing down. IIDX has a similar effect where speed mods and SUD+ are required for advancement.

>> No.8974610

>>8974544

Most packs after otakus dream anime 5th mix had a significant ramp in difficulty, chart logistics, and quality. Otaku's Dream Mix was pretty good. Avoid Instrumental, Hentai, and VG. Japan Mix 1-2 were alright, 2 was better.

Essentially, if you're new to Stepmania, play the earlier mixes. They contain easy to follow charts with simple patterns most of the time. If you're looking for more complex and difficult charts, play the later mixes.

>> No.8974647

Every day I regret that I started playing single-handed.
Nowadays it feels like I'm near peaking what can be achieved with a single hand, and I know the skill ceiling would be higher if I played with two hands.
But by this point I'm already too invested on that play-style, and whenever I try to learn how to play with two hands I just give up because I'm nowhere near as skilled as I am with one hand, and it just feels frustrating.

>> No.8974667

>>8974610
I might give them a try, but I find that my own interpretation of a chart gets in the way of enjoying what someone else writes. I'm a narcissist like that.

ART was great. Especially the video for Legend of Art. NMR in a dress!

>> No.8974823

1) this is not simulation, this is a guy playing on a real machine and he videotaped his hands. why he would play OML on Lincle is beyond me but to each his own.

2) his sloppy scratch technique and his absolutely atrocious handling of the ending combined with the fact that he barely cleared on hard leads me to believe this player isn't even very good. Now the players on related videos, specifically DOLCE and NNRT, those are quality players.

3) stepmania and iidx are two completely different games. that's probably why people are still playing stepmania.

Reminds me of upper-top end ITG where to actually play the song you need to have a perfect machine. In your house.

>> No.8974917

>>8974886

I don't keep up with IIDX and pop'n as much as I used to so I can't say if LISU is still active or not, most likely he still plays but isn't anywhere near the level DOLCE is.

>>8974867
>>8974899

lol this is kaiten123, the little engine that could. He used to be incredibly mediocre at stepmania but he just kept playing hard simfiles over and over until he developed stamina and MA. he's probably a lot better now since that video is 2 years old.

also files like that aren't meant to be taken seriously, they're meant solely for difficulty and to test limits, not for enjoyability.

>> No.8974934

>>8974823
It's obvious that it isn't simulation. Just saying that IIDX simulation is not hard to get or set up.
I could have posted a better player, but I just quickly looked for OML with handshot. But you're right, about playing OML on lincle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CR5pvode7eI
Here is a IIDX simulation video, very skilled player in using both a keyboard and a bm controller.

>> No.8974971

DOLCE and LISU are on totally different skill set levels. LISU hardclearing OML[a] 99% one-handed years ago was pretty amazing in it's own right.

You really should have made the arrow facing up when you posted for when I scroll by.

Also it just doesn't feel right unless i'm actually playing at an arcade.
