It would not be an exaggeration to say I am a Final Fantasy fanboy.

I love each one of them, including II, VIII, X-2, XI, XII, and XIII.
I would like to try XIV but it was taken off the market before I could, so I will be waiting for XIV [2.0].
I have yet to play XIII-2 though and should probably get around to it.

I don't know, the entire series is just enjoyable to me. All the mythos and characters and gameplay that changes from game to game, always being different but familiar, entices me.

For games, my favorite genre besides stg are 3D action games in the vein of Ninja Gaiden, God Hand, Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, etc.

I put great emphasis on aesthetics in games, and I will often refuse to play a game if they aren't well put together.

I also just go after the absolute best, genre-breaking games. After indulging myself in the medium for so long, it's not interesting to play anything else. They are usually laced with deep.

Oh yeah, I really dislike anything not set in the present times or future times. Tolkien clones make me physically sick and I wish all those games would die out.

Your definition fo "sequel" is quite reductive. It doesn't need to have the same characters, as long as it is set in the same timeline it is a sequel. Which means each Phantasy Star is a sequel of the previous even if they are chronologically separated by 1000 years.
Koudelka-Shadow Hearts is the same
Shining Force including the GG games, Shining in the darkness and Shining the Holy Ark are all set in the same timeline with connections to each episode.
Shining Force III is a trilogy in itself.

The Xenosaga trilogy then has the same main cast. And it was supposed to be 6 episodes long.

I enjoy grinding in Pokemon.
I love Zelda Majora's Mask side quests, the only game I know 100%.
The only Final Fantasy I've play is Crisis Core, I like the battle system but never finish it.
I can't finish NES Metroid, not because it's hard but because the same maps all over and over again.
I like Gurumin but getting gold medals in every map is boring as fuck since it takes more than 30 minutes per map and you can't check how many have you destroyed until you reach the goal and if you miss one you have to start again.
There's tons of games I've stopped midway or just before the last boss.
I hate when you need to grind or collect money to be able to continue the story.
The only Metal Gear Solid game I've play is MGS4, no kills was fun.
Valkyria Chronicles A rank was fun too.
I can't get past the bonus screen in Ice Climbers, back when I was kid I could reach the top really fast.

I have almost every NES and SNES rom available but never play them, or I play a game then decide to take a break and never touch it again, then after like 6 months I start again but since I already forgot everything I restart from the beginning just to stop again.

I have over 90gb of PSP games that I haven't touch.
I have all the Silent Hill games but haven't play them for more than 30 minutes, this includes downpour.

It seems I can only enjoy video games while someone is watching or chatting with me, this never happens since my only friend is my cousin.

Since I don't find games fun anymore I tried studying but I can't seems to be able to focus and thus can't learn anything, I blame you for this /jp/. You ruined my brain.

Back in my truNEET days I didn't own any newer consoles so I would just replay my games over and over again on my PS2, Dreamcast, and other older consoles.

I ended up logging about 400 hours into Persona 3 and I think 200 into Persona 4.

I think MMORPGs are boring as fuck, and would rather New Game+ a good RPG than waste my time and money on an MMO.

Etrian Odyssey was also my first dungeon crawler game and I really like that series. I haven't completed a single one of the games yet, but whenever a new one comes out I play it for a few months and just enjoy endlessly grinding and slowly building up my characters.

I love when I can see my stats increasing. Seeing my stats and the numbers go up when I level up or equip a new item is really fun. I enjoy the "looking through everything in the shop to see which is the best choice" aspect.

Dark gritty action rpgs where I get to fight against demons and such.

Dark souls/Demon souls

Witcher 1/2 (to a lesser extent)

Shit like that. I like to feel that I'm actually ridding the world of the evil that goes bump in the night. Its far more satisfying to me than, say, Working my way all the way up to defeat a single boss because they stole my waifu.

Nothing beats the thrill of going out into the forest, stalking and being stalked by a warewolf, until the choice moment where one of you gets the opportunity to pounce at the other. GAME ON.

I love Monster Hunter, Demon's Souls, and Dark Souls, whatever they would be categorized as. There's something about a game that punishes the player for being a button-mashing jackass that I love. The customization factor I find to be a bonus, as well. It remains simple despite all the options. No dicking around with talents, feats, or job classes. Just pick a weapon that you like and some armor to accompany it then go kill some monsters.

Rhythm games are another favorite. Primarily IIDX and DDR, but Project Diva can be fun on the go. Played Guitar Hero II for a couple months years ago but it didn't have the same appeal as others because the music just didn't appeal to me outside of a select few tracks. Also too easy for it to have any kind of lasting appeal.

Even though it was a launch title I'll cut it some slack, but it was pretty lousy in the gameplay department. I still loved it because of the interesting world and character designs, however. I managed to beat it and was glad I bought it in the first place.

Right now I'm re-playing Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Usually I play as Yukes (magic specialized characters) but this time I am trying the Lilties (melee focused). It's difficult for me to compare it to a Mario game but they did try way too hard to make it more than a Sonic game. Chip is possibly the worst character in the series, and there are bad design decisions all over the place(the basically useless shield, the unending battle jazz, X/square for homing attack, EGGMANLAND, etc). But the game also did a lot right, and what it did right it did well. The end product was a generally fun game with both good parts and bad parts. I just find the good more significant.

I would agree about Shadow, but his character's changed a lot from what it was in Adventure. It's hard to take him seriously.

I usually fall in love with games that allow for situations to be solved in many or at least more than 1 way.

Deus Ex is a good example of this
Tactics Ogre is a fair example of this
KOTOR is a good example of this
Steambot Chronicles is a good example of this
Fate/ExtraAs much as I wish it wasn't because I like Nasus shit is a bad example of this

I like games I can relax in, I quickly lose interest in anything that takes skill/competition. Looking for a new MMO to take it easy in, maybe FFXIV. I like cutesy DS games like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHsxpHiVHwM and

I was going to say, I'm waiting for 2.0.

I gave up before because no one would ever play with me. Everyone just soloed/ignored me if I asked if there was any space in their group.

What server are you on?

>MMO to take it easy

Really can't get much more casual than WoW. Sure it isn't free, but it has a lot more content than the typical Korean MMO, and despite what Vanilla veterans might complain about with the game being bad now, it really isn't. It just isn't what they remembered and started with. Newcomers looking for a casual experience is what it caters to. Just play the whole game solo if you like and do some PvP at max level if you want. Just don't do random dungeons since the player base is terrible and will mock you for doing what they deem wrong.

I wouldn't suggest private servers, either. I've never had a positive private server experience. I hated WoW until an online friend bought and paid for my WoW about 2 years ago, and then found it was actually fun to play casually. I think they may be better now, but the experience largely varies by server, and from what I remember, most of them out there have massively boosted EXP rates and such that completely ruin the whole factor of taking it easy so that you can rush to endgame and do whatever the popular raids are of the time.

I didn't like WoW much because it doesn't have much of a main storyline and I like group-based levelling. I can't make a cute character in it either.

Just looking for a new FFXI.

There are various private servers that have no EXP modifiers, and some that allow you to set what the modifiers are (blizzlike-5x)

Feenix is, in my opinion, the only private server worth playing on. I only hop on there for AVs, which have the reinforcement counter.

They probably did it as an effort to bring in more of the casual crowd. Really, FFXIV was an effort to do that in the first place but failed terribly because of unoptimized UI, performance issues, and a plethora of other problems. I played around March 2011 and enjoyed it, but didn't have time for it since I was already playing two other MMOs. I really feel that by that point they needed to stop listening to the players' incessant whining about bugs and just start adding actual content. That's what was lacking at the time, as the game itself was playable by that point. There were too many max level players that had nothing to do, as is the case in so many MMOs these days.

It's really amazing how they learned absolutely nothing from FFXI when making FFXIV.

They fired a majority of the staff that made the original FFXIV and put some (or most, I can't recall the exact amount) FFXI staff members in their place to help with the new MMO.

They changed around abilities to appeal to casuals? I'm not sure I understand. I guess you meant they made it more solo oriented for that reason, but I think it's horribly misguided.

I don't think it's currently playable, it's still really slow, the UI is still awful, there's still no AH and they couldn't have released it on the PS3 anyway without the rehaul. The copy pasted terrain that you have to endure throughout journey from 1 to 50 needs to go too. It feels like being stuck soloing in Tahrongi Canyon or Konschtat for the most of the game.

I don't blame you about looking for a new FFXI, but I doubt we'll have one. We have the same problem the Vanilla WoW veterans do: we want a game with all the mystique of a new game that no one knows anything about. It was fun back when no one knew the game mechanics properly, then evolving over time to completely master the game. It's especially true in FFXI's case since they didn't make the game obvious with how to gear like in WoW, with the tooltips that explain everything.

Everything is so casual these days--and for good reason since that's what sells--that I wouldn't expect another MMO that doesn't handhold the player for a while. I certainly do miss that feeling of being a good player without needing the cookie cutter best gear. FFXI was more about skill and adaptation than raw "are my stats good enough?" at endgame.

I could go on a rant about how endgame encounters in other MMOs are ruined to me because everything's just a massive DPS race these days, but that would probably have me posting an essay here, which isn't something I'm looking to do. Summed up, though, my main problem with modern (non-FFXI, from a former 7 year FFXI veteran's perspective) is the DPS race and how so many fights actually punish you for your damage not being able to keep up with what they deem an acceptable rate. Long gone are the days of a mana-efficient healer and solid back line being able to keep up a tank while slowly whittling away boss mobs with a minimal party setup. Now everything spawns adds, has stacking DoTs, or some sort of rage mode that means you'll get overwhelmed and die eventually if you don't drop the boss before things get out of hand. What happened to bosses being a challenge without the cheap tricks?

cont.

Leves are a terrible joke of a quest based levelling system. Monsters spawned randomly in the middle of nowhere justified by a wall of text "story" that comes up again the next time? I'm amazed there weren't complaints when people found about them. R The missions were so depressing too. Just running around talking to NPCs. The game still reeks of something that was extremely lazily made... I really hope 2.0 can turn that around.

It's not that I'm so bothered about combat/gear/stat mechanics, but I really miss grouping. I find grinding on my own really depressing - it feels like playing progress quest, which casuals seem to eat up, sadly. It was only fun in XI because you were doing stuff with other people.

>> No.9091869

>>9091788

Your complaints seem valid. I didn't play for long, only about a week. I didn't get much into the story because I was mostly testing out various classes and the battle system itself. I felt that was okay, but you're right. It is slow. Being slow in and of itself isn't a bad thing, but thinking back on it now, FFXIV handled it poorly.

FFXI was slow, but it was so slow that it actually gave you other things to do. As a melee, you would have to actively mitigate damage taken by keeping shadows up. A good red mage could keep up buffs on a full party while simultaneously keeping the main target debuffed or sleep/bind/grav'ing any adds. Basically, it let good players go from just doing their job to doing their job and some extra.

With optimized, streamlined, fast-paced combat that has you pressing a button every time global cooldown is reset, you only have time to do what the developers intended. If you don't, you'll be a bad tank/healer/dps. I actually despise that kind of combat in endgame settings and find it's only fun for me to play with while soloing. It's why I could never get into WoW endgame.

FFXIV was, unfortunately, right in the middle. It was too active to really let you do a whole lot in between to make a meaningful contribution (that and the limiting factor of TP) but it was too slow to feel active enough for that type of combat, as well. It rode the fence, and it did it poorly.

>>9091824

Ah, so a different problem for you brought on by the same source: catering to casuals. It's understandable. I miss grouping up, too, but on the other hand I don't have my old LS mates to play with and even online I'm far too much of a social train wreck to make any new friends these days so my best option is solo play.

Funny thing about that, though. Some of my old LS mates recently invited me to play Aion and as much as I miss playing with them, I just can't get into the game. It's terrible. There's all sorts of things in it that keep pointing to the fact that it wants to be WoW, but it isn't. Wow is better. I'll probably log in today and tell them I just can't get into the game so they can try to find someone else to fill my spot in their group.

I always found it hard to make friends too. I'd add people to my friends list but end up forgetting who they are later. I'd do content with other people of course, but we never really became friends.

Having to find 18 people for some missions was ridiculous though. I never got past that crystal warrior fight in the Zilart arc.

>> No.9092218

>>9092142

Ah, yeah, that one was hard for years and years. Still, you do know that it was possible to do the fights individually with a 6-man party, right? So many people got blocked on that mission because they thought that you had to do the harder alliance version of it Oh well, it's too late now. You could probably solo or duo it without much trouble at 99 but the lack of content ended up driving away a lot of people, myself included.

>> No.9092230

>>9092218
I can't remember if I knew that or not, I just remember trying it with an alliance and wiping 2 or 3x and kind of left it after that.

Not having much I'm into lately has made me want to try making my own games, should be fun. I'm surprised /v/ doesn't do the same considering the amount of complaining they do. Surely a dedicated open source community could do a better job of making games than corporations run by braindead executives?

>> No.9092293

>>9092230
Doubtful. Instead of a bunch of idiots that know nothing of gaming but have a mind for business making important decisions, you'll have a bunch of people all with their own idea of the perfect game trying to shove their ideas together and coming up with a Frankenstein-like abomination of a game. If you have the determination, take the ZUN approach and do what you want all by yourself. I think that's probably why his games are so popular, in part. Everyone has a favorite, and will complain about mechanics in certain games, but regardless, they're what he wanted to do and it shows. The games don't feel like they're completely different from one to the next.

Just don't fall into the trap that actual for-profit indie game devs do. Don't cater to what you think people want. Give them what you actually want, and surely someone else will enjoy it.

>> No.9092354

>>9092293
Yeah, the ZUN approach is my plan, until the project gets too big for me to handle by myself. I'm going to work a lot on it over the summer, but I have a lot to learn. I can code but I've never done anything like this before, so I just ordered a game coding book as a quick introduction on how to go about things properly. I'm confident I can make something that looks much better than Yume Nikki or Touhou at least...

I'll make the kind of thing I want to play, but hopefully /jp/ would be able to enjoy themselves in it too. Probably an RPG/Adventure game at the start. It'd be fun to do some net coding and make it into something that we could hang out in eventually.

I wonder how the open source community managed to organise well enough to put together and maintain Linux and stuff. Surely if a group of skilled, likeminded people were motivated could do the same to make game engines and the like. Then small-medium sized groups could use the previously developed technology to make their own stuff. But of course, it's a ridiculous thought, video game addicts don't generally have skills or motivation.
