Heyo all, a chance has arisen for me to go to Japan, next year. I plan to take it, since Japan is a pretty cool place and such- but I just have a few questions.

1) If you don't act like an anime loving faggot and actually learn their language will they accept you? (I'm not American, if it helps)
2) I am already sort of learning the language, I have a bunch of books from a torrent and some audio stuff. The artist for the audio stuff is only listed as "Pimsleur" I just did a google search, and they did turn up. So is this a good approach to learn the language? I've heard rosetta stone isn't as good as it might seem.

I'm not sure what to expect by posting this, I guess I'll find out in a second.

It was the only picture I could think of damn it. I'm going there for educational reasons, it's not for fun. I intend to get something out of the experience, I just want to approach it properly.

Ask /trv/.

/jp/ has evolved beyond japanophilia and became japanophobes. To us Japan is a scary, racist place that just so happens to make cartoons and computer games we like.

It doesn't. You're actually more likely to be accepted if you are a white american than from any other part of asia.

Learning the language will give you an entirely different experience. Please do so. You can learn a shitload in a year.

How long will you stay?

Ignore the angry japan-haters. It's really just a bandwagon and non-matured.

Those are some harsh words there.

>I'm not American
Problem there. Japs hate, but love Americans. It's weird, they're "fascinated" by them it seems and too bad you're not one.

>Rosetta Stone
You obviously haven't been learning the language.

Just a tip for you: Don't come to /jp/ for Japan related advice. There are other resources on the net for that. Good bye.

Sorry that everyone shat all over your thread. If you're sill here, I can share my experience from when I was a foreign exchange student there.

What do you mean by 'accept'? If you're not Asian, they'll never think of you as a Japanese person, no matter how flawless your language and cultural skills are. Japan is like 99.96% ethnically Asian, so you'll always stand out as a foreigner.

As for them being NICE to you, from my experience, they LOVE foreigners. They think America and English is cool, and if you're white but NOT from America, that only makes you MORE exotic.

>> No.9141109

Why are you summer kiddies so angry?

1) Not truly except you, but yes, who wants to look like an anime faggot anyways? Just be polite and as nice as you can and you shouldn't run into any problems. You're going to get strange looks, but you can't avoid that.
2) Rosetta Stone is shit. Just practice everyday and use Genki and you'll be all set. If you have a DS, I'd recommend checking out My Japanese Coach. It's actually pretty damn good and really drills shit into your head. If the touch screen is off, then the strictness it has for brush stroke orders in kanji might frustrate you, but it's for your own good.

Forgot to sage, but other people are bumping the thread now, so I'm not going to bother.

As far as your language skills go, I'm not familiar with Pimsleur or rosetta stone. I took a couple of Japanese classes before traveling to Japan, and they used the first "Genki" book. "Genki" is a WONDERFUL book series for studying Japanese. While I was in Japan, I'd read a lesson in the study book, do the correlating section in the workbook, and then try to practice what I learned whenever I spoke to someone. This simple formula worked quite well.

>> No.9141135

1) It's not really acceptable to be one of those guys, try to be polite as possible.
2) Learning it from a class is better, or somebody who is actually fluent in it

Genki is a must and your grammar foundation but I recommend Pimsleur for the speaking element. If you are going to be in Japan, that will be the most important thing and you'll need to know it well.

Seriously though, go to /a/. Everyday at 6:30 EST they have a Japanese thread and it's decent. You can ask your questions there.

>> No.9141175

I'm white, and I can tell you that they LOVE white people. They think America and English is cool, and if you're white but NOT American, that only makes you MORE exotic to them. Japan is something like 99.96% ethnically Asian, so you'll always stand out as a foreigner, and usually in a good way.

If you're black, prepare to get asked some very strange questions. Black people are INCREDIBLY rare in Japan, and because of that, there are a LOT of wacky rumors about them. Japan is incredibly introverted, culturally-speaking, and the information they get about other places and events is scarce and diluted. You might have an innocent-looking child call you "nigga" just because he thinks that's what he's supposed to call black people. For the most part, though, you are incredibly exotic and cool, almost scary.

If you're Asian, I'm sorry. You'll still be cool for being foreign, somewhat, but a lot of times you will run into situations where people will just be frustrated at you for not knowing the language despite being Asian.

As for getting them to 'accept' you, I'm not sure what you mean.

2) I'm not familiar with those. I used the "Genki" book series while I was in Japan, and it was immensely useful. Study a lesson in the main book, do the correlating section in the workbook, and try to practice it whenever you talk to someone. Following this simple formula made studying really easy.

More like, they will be frustrated at you for being a dirty Chinese/Korean/Filipino etc. That's why it's so funny when asian-americans act like Japan is superior or get butthurt for Japan. The Japanese hate the guts out of these peoples.

Asian-americans have zero relation to Japan, unless they're actually Japanese-americans.

norwegian-filipino to be specific
As you'd expect, my dominant genes have left me with brown eyes and black hair, among other asian characteristics. Will this make a gargantuan of a difference? Was I this close?

However, I was lucky enough to spend the majority of my life in glorious europa-land. And an honorable birth place.

Sorry for this silly piece of blog.
