Ever feel that some people here are just elitist for the sake of it and they don't really know the reason why one should act elitist towards it?

Normalfags are mostly like that, they do it because of their herd mentality.

Who's projecting? Elitism still exists on some boards of 4chan because we don't want idiots from /b/ and /v/ running around the place. Normalfag elitism stems from just repeating what you've heard others say to fit in.

Why do you have issues with not having a clearly defined board topic?

Do you need clearly defined rules and routine to feel at ease? You may be autistic.

>> No.9442724

Everyone is so fake here. I wish people would just take it easy.

>> No.9442737 [DELETED]

There is a reason

Our board's main topic is quite specialised. First of all, most people believe it or not can't be bothered becoming well-acquainted with Touhou canon. It's a big universe. Much easier to be a secondary. Secondly, untranslated VNs have an obvious entry barrier. You need to have learned Japanese, which dumb nerds view as some incredibly difficult achievement, as well as be well-versed in an obscure (for Westerners) subculture.

Furthermore, subjects like dolls and figs require money and effort.

So yes, the reason is that we are essentially the board with the highest power level and we don't need subhumans invading us and bringing that down. By the way, only peasants use "elitist" as an insult. What exactly is wrong with being part of an elite? Or of having high standards? If you're calling someone "elitist" in order to make them look bad you're probably just jealous that you're not part of their elite. That's fine but please deal with your self esteem issues by yourself instead of shitting up the board.

>> No.9442738

Translated VNs are fine here.

>> No.9442755

>>9442737
We don't have to actively try to force people out. We might as well be like /a/ and boku no pico if we do that. We should leave the pruning to the natural barriers that you mentioned, like Touhou and untranslated VNs.

>> No.9442758

>>9442720
Because the userbase IS autistic, so now we have a board where people are trying to keep rule in a rule-less board, it's retarded to be honest.

I don't have a problem with that.
The problem is when others mimic the behavior and they don't know the exact reason behind it.

>> No.9442759 [DELETED]

This board needs more elitism if you ask me, or it will turn into a slower /a/.

>> No.9442762 [DELETED]

>>9442737

Oh and of course there's also the problem of people like this >>9442679

The topics aren't unclear at all. First and foremost /jp/ is the Touhou and VN board. Other than that, the "problem" is that having an initially unclear title meant /jp/ had to define itself, which it has done over 4 years. There are plenty of very clear /jp/ topics, as well as plenty of non-/jp/ topics. You don't get a nice little guidebook to hold your hand in learning these like other boards. You learn them by lurking and reading and if you don't know whether your thread fits the accepted topics then you shut up until you're sure.

The lack of lurking on the part of pretty much everyone on 4chan nowadays is is our biggest problem because it's what invites nerds to see "Otaku Culture" and instantly assume they can make random anime/manga/jdrama/here's something that happened in Japan lol threads. No one wants to be quiet and learn a board's culture, everyone just wants to add their own gay little opinions and make their voice heard. How very Web 2.0.

>> No.9442765

Why are /jp/ers so elitist that they force themselves to like slightly less mainstream things like Touhou and VNs just to distance themselves from anime, manga and game otaku?

I imagine a lot of people are just here because /a/ is moronic and none of them can cope with Japanese.

>> No.9442776

Sure, I agree.

However there is one kind of aggressive "elitism" I wouldn't want to see end on /jp/ -- we need to continue to keep the greentext and reaction image shit in check. That's not even elitism, honestly. Some imageboards even have it as a specific rule. Posts typed in a deliberately retarded style is not something we should have to read. Unless it's funny. Which it's not.

Stop complaining. /jp/ would be a very slow, boring place with a lot of regurgitated discussion if everyone kept to such a restricted set of topics. If you want a board to serve multiple topics you don't get the right to cherrypick what is and what isn't relevant.

If you want a board solely for Touhou there is one.

Slow, yes, boring debatable. If all our threads were on-topic and thoughtful then who cares if there was only 1 post per week, it would be worth reading more than 5000 shitposts per day. But that's a utopia anyway, so why argue.

An "offtopic" thread isn't the same thing as shitposting though.

>> No.9442820 [DELETED]

>>9442804
>It's amazing how people can keep talking about it

No it isn't. It's a huge series. There's more than 10 official games alone. There's more than 100 distinct characters. It has by far the largest amount of fanart and probably every other kind of fanwork of any Japanese series ever. There is almost nothing you could think to discuss that doesn't have some Touhou work related to it. Tons of music, manga, games -- all collected under one umbrella. To have a board dedicated to talking about that is not "amazing" at all.

We have one of the highest percentages of shitposts on 4chan. And don't give me that shit with /v/ as an example of a worse board, that board moves fast and it doesn't matter if an off-topic thread gets posted there since it will be removed from the first page in a matter of one refresh. Here's the story of how 4chan turned to shit:

1) /b/ went mainstream and attracted everyone to 4chan
2) The idiots it attracted liked the whole '/b/ culture' meme shit and thought it applied to every other board
3) They go to every other board thinking 'I wonder what culture this place has :D' and try and force a 'culture' onto it by looking at it's memes and archived threads and spamming them all over the board.

4) They've been distracted with the bigger boards like /a/, /b/, /v/ etc. for a while now and they're now bored and want to spread this same shit to the other smaller & slower boards which are content with being small and slow.

5) They post all over the small, slow boards because they're used to /b/, /a/ and /v/ speeds normally posting shit which doesn't belong here or asking 'is ____ /jp/ related?'

6) In an attempt to survive against being drowned out by retard 'i wanna be a 4chan' kids, original members of the slower boards suddenly have to be more active else they get taken over.

7) shitposting is born as a form of ironic trolling and spamming intended to deter these kiddies by showing them how retarded their behaviour is. Kids trying to fit in think it's a meme and spread it all over 4chan accrediting /jp/ as being 'that shitposting place'.

Shitposting is basically now a meme, /jp/ is over and in the future it'll be a meme board for touhou and VNs used by a few /a/ and /v/tards before being closed by moot and replaced with a 'Japanese Games' board.

I've felt the same, too. I think /jp/'s rules should be an unwritten Anime/Random-style none. Obviously, we don't want everyone coming in and ruining the place thinking it's the new /b/ (like with /r9k/'s original incarnation. it actually did start out interesting for the first few days), so it can't be official. I like Touhou and VNs but there's just not enough to talk about to keep the board from stagnating. Some of our best threads are actually off-topic ones that somehow don't get deleted and have insightful posting.

If I like on-topic (deemed by the OP) threads with discussion so much, why don't I go to a normal registration-required forum? It's simple. They don't have the benefits of loosely moderated, anonymous posting. They have the common mentality that post count is equal to credibility. Most proper forums also don't get nearly the activity of even the slowest 4chan boards. There's many reasons I'd rather stay here than move to some other site, despite its failings.

I don't think it would work anyway. Current board culture, without an official announcement especially, would just have everyone arguing over what content is acceptable without anyone actually posting anything meaningful. It's been happening for a long time and I see no reason it would stop without moderation, suddenly. An official announcement would just spread news around that we're /b/ 2.0 and then suddenly we're spammed with 3D porn, 3D porn, the same rehashed memes from 4 years ago, and whatever else gets posted on /b/ these days. I go back once every few months when /jp/ is exceptionally slow and I'm bored just to see if maybe I could find the rare gem of a thread. All I ever see are the same things these days.

Semi-off topic: I never cared much for memes, but has anyone else noticed that in the past 4-5 years especially they've gotten worse? It's all advice dog spinoffs or stick figures. It seems like the prevalent mindset is to take one of two established formulae and add some new text or a new variation of the picture and suddenly, it's original content. Memes were always spammed on the active boards but at least you got actual new things to see spammed every so often instead of just [square image with alternating rays of color in the background and a picture framed by some text] or [black and white stick figure expressing an emotion].

>> No.9444875

Yeah memes have gotten worse, they all use that same Advice Dog Format. Even non-4chan memes like Nyan cat is just rip offs of older memes like Caramelldansen etc.

4chan doesn't even have anything worthwhile for me anymore. I post on /jp/ because I'd rather be an actual /jp/ poster than some shiteater that came from another board. Aside from that, 4chan is dead - welcome to what happens when something gets mainstream.
