Like so many bazillion wannabe photographers I have a Rebel XT with that 50mm/1.8 prime lens. Night time hand-held shots are still shitty unless you crank the ISO up to 800 or 1600 and you have it on the largest aperture, then they become barely acceptable.

This is very true, but from what I've observed it's more a distaste towards recognising themselves as "belonging" to a expat community because they're all trying really hard to fit into japan and to assimilate themselves into the society. The pressures of just living there seems to make them cringe at the idea of relaxing for a second and becoming one of those "rude ignorant tourists", everyone wants to be the exception.

However I have never gone to japan on anything but a temp visitor visa, so my reason for hating most other whiteys is that they tend to be utter morons. Especially Australians their hideous shameful drinking culture combined with the japanese drinking enviroment is just painful to watch, ugh.

Oh no, it isn't but even today I tried using the Odakyu line with a JR pass only to have the gates slam back at me... I did consider using a gaijin blast and just powering on through but I decided it would be better to go and pay... It was only Machida to Sagami-ono so 120 I didn't think was so bad...
I guess it didn't help that I was half asleep also

Man, I was half asleep once and not watching where I was walking, chucked my ticket into the machine just to have it slam back at me and then I looked up realized that I was at the entrance to the shinkansen. I apoligised to the gate lady and felt pretty damn embarassed.

Still my point stands it is nothing close to the rat maze that people whine about.

That I will agree with. I don't find it hard to navigate at all, but this is my fourth time here and this time I'm here for the next 13 months. I expect by the end of it I'll be navigating like a Japanese and *gasp* maybe even sleeping!
I did manage to fall asleep today on the train, but I was getting off on the last stop so it wasn't exactly like I was doing it for real (ie sleeping and waking up at my stop)

PS I just took this photo. I'm in a friend's apartment right now while I look for my own. I don't have a bank account yet so the apartment I want may not be possible for me. Pity, really...

I didn't find the railway system that hard, you can always just spend a minute or two looking at the map with romanji to see where you want to go anyway, and everything is color coded.
but what was hard to navigate was fucking shinjuku station, especially if you have to switch between various rail and subway lines.

Probably the only thing about the trains that really amases me is the passengers. They can seriously just fall asleep standing, like right there in a crowd on a moving train, keeping balance and shit. Not only that, they always wake up just before their stop it's like their alarm clock is ingrained from their daily commuting activities.

Also they deal with being on a packed train well, the trains where I live don't get close to half as packed but they are still worse purely because the people who ride them don't know how to squeese up and not pretend like the entire carrage is to themselves.

Never been myself so I can't comment on the people, but it's a popular destination within Japan for Japanese. I know quite a few people who were excited about their trips to Hokkaido past/future...

As for the weather it's a good few degrees cooler than mainland Japan. I should imagine that it's somewhat more bearable.
It gets colder in the winter, though! Days on end of snow that actually sticks!

I always manage to do that, I don't know how. I just end up waking a stop or two before I'm supposed to get off of a train.

Also, I went to Japan last month. It was quite fun.
