Tatoos are really not liked in Japan. I saw one sign in the Prince Hotel in Hiroshima that said no tatoos are permitted in ANY part of the hotel. They really dont like them

In Japan, only Yakuza used to have tattoos. That's why they are looked down upon.

They aren't going to care if you have a small tattoo on your arm or lower back or something. Full-body tattoos, on the other hand, scream YAKUZA, and those are the people they're trying to keep out.

Not because they have anything against yakuza, just that it would probably discourage other customers if someone very obviously yakuza was hanging around.
