I actually went to Japan, not because I like the Japanese or their culture or had any interest in it but for the FIFA 2004 cup.

What I liked:

The nature: their environment really is one of a kind and quite alien to a Euro.

Old architecture: the older buildings and villages they left intact, as well as some of their "castles".

Some of the markets, particularly the ones where they sell what would be junk to a Japanese but pretty cool for a tourist.

The food was alright, beyond sushi and all that (though the cuisine is still quite alien), I hated the tea though, I prefer good old black tea.

The trains: They are fucking badass, if you go to Japan jump on a muffugin train, just don't buy their sandwiches, they are shit.

Toilets: it's nice to have water squirt at your anus, like a bidet in a toilet.

Volcanos/geysers/mountains: again, beautiful and I got to cook some eggs in a geyser.

What I disliked:

The people: they do not speak a lick of English and if they do it's indecipherable, this complaint is mostly about Tokyo and Kyoto where one would expect at least some people to speak English particularly in restaurants and hotels (especially during fucking FIFA). Even in Serbia they know some English. Though I agree this is an unfair complaint, can't expect someone to speak a foreign language in their own country, but still. Also they don't care much for foreigners unless you are buying something from them.

The roads: packed, nonsensical and full of tiny ass cars, even their trucks are tiny.

Stores: particularly the electronics in Tokyo, it's like a fucking arabian bazaar there you enter one store and you're stuck in a maze full of moon runes, weird ass phones and the Japanese.

Restaurants (beyond the hotel): I do not suggest anyone who doesn't read moonrunes to go to these, you have to rely on pictures and sometimes engrish.

Ice tea: no seriously what the fuck, it's like someone brewed some teabag and put it in a can, didn't even add sugar.

Modern architecture: it's all fucking cramped, it's literally an ant colony in the big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto.

Train sandwiches: no, just no.

Tour guides: mine was fucking terrible.

Brazil winning over Germany: no seriously, fuck you Brazil. The worst was the BRs gloating HUEHUEUEHing on the streets.

Kabuki: I just don't fucking understand the point, they don't use words and it still doesn't make sense, probably a precursor to modern "theater" and "art".

I probably went for the wrong reasons, but I did get to see a great deal of the country as a tourist, I wouldn't go back, especially to live there, thats just guaranteed insanity. I had travelled to most European countries (excluding a lot of Eastern Europe, particularly the Balkans with the exception of Serbia) and I would go there instead even if I was offerred 1 million dollars to spend a day in Japan.

But who the fuck knows, 8 years is a long time and a lot has probably changed.

In closing, Japan should be enjoyed and experienced from afar (like you guys are doing) in the very same way the rule applies to Russia (where I am from and live).

Japan is like an anthropological bonanza. I love going on Google Streetview to virtually tour the streets in any given Jp city - it is neat just looking around at all of the details, such as the way the houses are shoehorned in, with just enough room for a car and some potted plants. Or, clothes drying on poles instead of lines, and just how neat looking the dwellings are!

For the same reason, I enjoy all of the little quirks unique to Japan when watching anime. Things like instant hot water heaters on the wall in the kitchen. I can never get enough of watching stuff like Maison Ikkoku for capturing all of these details.
