Japanese bedding is appealing to me. It seems space efficient, firm, comfortable, and cost effective.

I don't actually know anything about it, though. Is there a certain brand or type of mattress that is particularly good? Can I use normal sheets and blankets? Is it worth it without tatami floors?

I use a double duvet, a blanket and a pillow. I lay the double duvet out flat on the floor, do the same with the blanket, and put the pillow on the far left. I lay down and fold half of the duvet/blanket over me. So half is underneath to make it comfortable and half is on top to keep me warm. Even though it's a wooden floor I still find it comfortable. In the morning I fold it all up neatly and put it in a corner of my room.

I prefer it to a bed because it saves space and is supposedly good for your back. You should try it, it not for everyone though.

I sleep with my old ass mattress on the floor, and I have a sheet, a fleece blanket and a comforter layered over each other for warmth. I figure this is as close as I can get to a tradtional japanese futon without spending money.

When I have a house, I'll probably buy a good one. The most expensive part is the comforter. They can cost close to five hundred dollars for a silk lined, traditional blanket.

I have a mattress on the floor. It has certain appeal. Space efficient and simple.
There is this problem that there is black, spot-like "mold" or something weird like that in the back of the mattress.
I guess that can be solved by taking sheets out and refreshing the mattress by leaning it towards wall every morning.

Yeah, 'hiding' stuff seems pretty pointless. But the fact remains that you can store things under a bed. You can't store anything on the floor-space you use for a futon.
If you have limited space, then using the same bit of your floor for both sleeping and storage seems like the best way to go.

But you can get frames for futons, in which case it's obviously a moot point.

Also, I find this more comfortable than cheap box spring mattresses, which have metal parts sticking into your sides and back. I can't afford those expensive ones.

I'd like to purchase a japanese style futon, but they are expensive and not widely available in this country. The idea of tatami is very appealing to me also. I have a Japanese style futon which lays on the floor. The floor is carpet, which is not quite tatami floors, but is closer to them than hardwood is. Tatami is slightly soft, see.

Anyways, it's much more comfortable than a western style mattress is for me, because of how firm it is. Good for the back, but God help you if you decide to try to sleep on your side for whatever reason.

The one I have is filled with wool batting instead of cotton, which seems to be superior in every way. It resists mold and mildew much better than cotton does, so a wool futon doesn't have to be aired out every other week, which is good since I live someplace where it rains for the majority of the year. I still rotate and flip it every week, though. The wool is also warmer in cold weather, and is refreshingly cool in warm weather, and it doesn't soak up sweat like a cotton mattress.

Plus, wool is naturally fire retardant, and bedding is legally required to be fire retardant in America. For cotton and foam, that means lots of chemicals you don't want to sleep on. No such need for wool.

My futon came from http://www.dragonmama.com/ if anyone is interested.
