It pisses me off how highly Japanese people value proximity to authority. Every other 2D girl is the daughter of a politician, or a principal, or an influential family, or someone similar.

Antiintellectualism runs deeps in America and has been in place for more then 100 years. This manifests itself in even benign words like 'nerd' and 'geek'.

See The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Man of Action versus Man of Learning. That's one of the first instances in American History where the Man of Action (aka dumb jock) was held above the Man of Learning (depicted as weird, smelly, undesirable, etc.)

These stereotypes are extremely prevalent and may cause kids to not try as hard as they can in school so as to avoid the 'nerd' label. Being smart in this country is sadly something to be mocked.

They get their "socialization training" and some of them have been practicing for years, but it's incredibly obvious that they have asperger's as soon as they speak.

Socialization isn't just some skill that you can hone. If it doesn't come naturally to you then the best you can hope for is to function at the level of robotic aspie. Recently a kid from my college was stabbed to death because he allegedly looked at the other guys funny.

So yupe, people will find all sorts of reasons to discriminate against others. Whether it's their popularity, their intelligence, their aloofness or their shyness. All it takes is to be different and one kid not liking it for you to be stabbed to death. And discriminating is something we all do to some degree. Do you look at the news of a child prodigy and instinctively try to find something about him to make his success less newsworthy to you? Do you see a professor forget his key and laugh at it while you also forget yours occasionally? Do you see China or North Korea achieve something and try to find something to mock? If you think only actual assholes get hated, boy I'm afraid the real world is far too harsh for you.

And of course, anti-intellectualism in the US is nothing new. That's why we have all these "doubt the scientists" and popular nerdism nonsense. In fact, only in the US do I see a word like "nerd" being used so prevalently. Usually in other languages there are only words like "bookworms", but even then they are not used with such a negative sense like in the US.

But unless you plan to operate in a field filled with idiots, you won't have to fear being called a nerd any time soon. Because if you choose your career right, usually you will be dealing with people who are at least as capable as you.

so, who's accountable? is it the person or what's happened to them? and if what's happened to them was fueled by other people, are they responsible? no, the same dilemma is true for them - what they did was also influenced by their past experiences, which were influenced by older and more distant past experiences, etc etc.

maybe i am not articulating this properly, but "accountability" seems like something which doesn't exist, except for the very first thing which ever existed

Most here are almost pathologically aware of their surroundings or the thought-processes of their peers. The content of latter of course doesn't have to be correct, but your average /jp/er cared in their formative years (if not still) very much about the impression they made on others, to the point of paranoia, and I'd wager a large part of the socializing problems are due to feelings of inadequacy derived from that, coupled with the huge difference in the way we communicate. It's a completely different approach how we perceive the world.
