Why are characters with glasses and good grades seen as "cool" in Japanese pop culture?

In real life, those people are called "nerds".

It pisses me off how highly Japanese people value proximity to authority. Every other 2D girl is the daughter of a politician, or a principal, or an influential family, or someone similar.

Maybe it's because every Japanese person in the workforce is chasing 'success', working twelve hour days or slaving away at their educations for a future that won't come. These sorts of characters - daughters of statesmen, rich fathers, etc - embody 'success', so it's good to fantasize about them, maybe

>> No.10244790

I know every autistic retard out there likes to think they're some sort of misunderstood genius that's only disliked because society can't appreciate their intellect, but the truth is you were called a nerd because of your awful personality, not because you had good grades and wore glasses.

Glasses don't matter shit if you're not already ugly as fuck, and being smart is only ever a disadvantage if you lack social skills to go with it.

Antiintellectualism runs deeps in America and has been in place for more then 100 years. This manifests itself in even benign words like 'nerd' and 'geek'.

See The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and the Man of Action versus Man of Learning. That's one of the first instances in American History where the Man of Action (aka dumb jock) was held above the Man of Learning (depicted as weird, smelly, undesirable, etc.)

These stereotypes are extremely prevalent and may cause kids to not try as hard as they can in school so as to avoid the 'nerd' label. Being smart in this country is sadly something to be mocked.

One reason why the US is on the decline.

In Japan like many countries other than America getting good grades goes hand in hand with cool culture.

You know how in many anime and games from Majikoi to Valkyria Chronicles 2 they have class A through F and the people that score well and are in A are ultra elitist popular pricks, and the dumb/eccentric kids (which almost always includes the protagonist) are in the farthest class down the line?

>Yeah, personality traits are actually just skill.

Then why is it that everyone can spot a person with asperger's the second that they open their mouth?

They get their "socialization training" and some of them have been practicing for years, but it's incredibly obvious that they have asperger's as soon as they speak.

Socialization isn't just some skill that you can hone. If it doesn't come naturally to you then the best you can hope for is to function at the level of robotic aspie. That's much better than untrained aspies that throw tantrums every few hours and cry, but they will still always be a socially inept loser regardless of the amount of training they do.

Recently a kid from my college was stabbed to death because he allegedly looked at the other guys funny.

So yupe, people will find all sorts of reasons to discriminate against others. Whether it's their popularity, their intelligence, their aloofness or their shyness. All it takes is to be different and one kid not liking it for you to be stabbed to death. And discriminating is something we all do to some degree. Do you look at the news of a child prodigy and instinctively try to find something about him to make his success less newsworthy to you? Do you see a professor forget his key and laugh at it while you also forget yours occasionally? Do you see China or North Korea achieve something and try to find something to mock? If you think only actual assholes get hated, boy I'm afraid the real world is far too harsh for you.

And of course, anti-intellectualism in the US is nothing new. That's why we have all these "doubt the scientists" and popular nerdism nonsense. In fact, only in the US do I see a word like "nerd" being used so prevalently. Usually in other languages there are only words like "bookworms", but even then they are not used with such a negative sense like in the US.

But unless you plan to operate in a field filled with idiots, you won't have to fear being called a nerd any time soon. Because if you choose your career right, usually you will be dealing with people who are at least as capable as you.

>> No.10245899 [DELETED]

hear me out here, i am genuinely confused

freeze-frame a point in time, because it's confusing if you put the fourth dimension in this picture right now but i'm still right

a person is doing an action, ok? any action. it doesn't matter. why is the person doing the action?

the person is doing the action because of what's happened to them. a decision is the sum of a lifetime's experiences, right.

what's happened to them - their experiences - are weirdly outside their control and also within their control. the person could influence them, but the influence they make is predetermined by other things, also outside their control, since we've established that decisions are made based on what a person has learned

so, who's accountable? is it the person or what's happened to them? and if what's happened to them was fueled by other people, are they responsible? no, the same dilemma is true for them - what they did was also influenced by their past experiences, which were influenced by older and more distant past experiences, etc etc.

maybe i am not articulating this properly, but "accountability" seems like something which doesn't exist, except for the very first thing which ever existed

so, you being fat/scrawny/lonely/whatever is the fault of the universal singularity

why do humans blame each other for things they had no part in? it's not even useful. you would get way more done without blaming people and just fixing things.

Most here are almost pathologically aware of their surroundings or the thought-processes of their peers. The content of latter of course doesn't have to be correct, but your average /jp/er cared in their formative years (if not still) very much about the impression they made on others, to the point of paranoia, and I'd wager a large part of the socializing problems are due to feelings of inadequacy derived from that, coupled with the huge difference in the way we communicate. It's a completely different approach how we perceive the world.
