I've been playing Canvas 3 on the PSP. I intended to go for Renge's route, but I ended up derailing into Kanna's. Wasn't anything exceptional, but there were plenty of cute moments, which was enough for me. I liked the soundtrack quite a bit, too. Checking the music gallery, there's 3 different instrumental arranges of each heroine's image song, which is a pretty neat touch.

I didn't see any choices that seemed to lead to Kanna's sister's route, though it's not like I tried all of them, and I guess I'll just check a walkthrough if I need to. Renge also not having any choices when most of the other heroines have them also made it feel like her route had to be unlocked, but apparently not, so eh. Either way, I'm going for Renge route next.

I'm giving the Nostalgica (or Nostalgico, whatever the developers want) trial a try today or tomorrow, and am looking forward to Daitoshokan.

Are there any games like MLA? Something as passionate and, for lack of a better word, 浪漫 as that game. Sure it had pacing issues, but the parts worth playing really got me worked up, I loved the power speeches and themes of sacrifice during the coup and all of the battles, as well as the pride of the soldiers. The nationalism was a bit extreme, but it wasn't lacking in merit and power.

It's just those AWESOME moments that I'm looking for. Dies Irae, Itsusora, Hanachirasu and Muramasa's battle speeches all had me pumping my fists mid dialogue, but I've played the more popular games so a lesser known title would be preferred. Military setting isn't at all necessary.

Muramasa by a long shot. Baldr Sky had it's hooks, but in my case the most fulfillment I got out of that game was the gameplay. However it is also a game that just about anyone with whatever tastes can play and enjoy (like FS/N, Ayakashibito, and Himawari. not the best games, but some of the most accessible ones that anyone could enjoy.), which I can appreciate. In my case, and I know I'm in a minority here, but that game was just too long without sufficient reward for the journey. Sora's route was great, but it wasn't great enough imo.

Muramasa had a lot of great ideas that just never really came together. It had a ton of built up of interesting back history, lore, and characters that all end up actually not really doing anything in the end. The most annoying thing was that Kanae and Ichijou basically disappeared during Muramasa's route. All the routes were extremely enjoyable up to 80% of the way and then the narrative kind of puttered out where it felt like the writer was struggling to tie things up. Given the scope that Muramasa was trying to portray, I think it really needed to be duology were even a trilogy.

Baldr Sky on the other hand was consistently entertaining throughout the entire two games. At no point did I ever feel I was reading a "masterpiece" so to say like I did with Muramasa, but I could never put the game down since the pace was kept so well.

So I'd say that BS was a constant 90 while Muramasa fluctuated between 100 and 70.

I'm not sure which one wins but both games are an absolute must read.

>great ideas that just never really came together
It didn't act on all elements of its setting, that's fair enough, but Muramasa is one of the strongest themed eroge I have ever read. Every major theme in that game, which the characters portrayed/reflected/represented/signified(etc.) was fully lived out in the contents of that game, they were explored to the most extreme end possible (if only for the author). I can't agree with >characters that all end up actually not really doing anything in the end.
either for that reason. Every character in that game lived out their legacy. Ichijou and Kanae didn't really have a role to play in Muramasa's route. Their lack of presence was filled by Chachamaru, who was a great character, but also probably the most irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Sure, their sudden disappearance was kind of nonsensical given how persistent they were before the last route, but at the same time, their stories had been told (which is why that one set of lines in the Finale was so perfect.)

That being said, I'll confess that I'm also very partial to Muramasa and loved the hell out of that game, so my perspective might be shaded with bias. Besides the unnecessary and underdeveloped romance elements and random sex scenes, there was not a single point of time in Muramasa that I didn't think that game was absolutely outstanding 9+ level.

>> No.10377462

>>10377152
Yeah I agree, Muramasa may have had some faults (I personally didn't like the inclusion of "gameplay", especially in the last route) but it's by far the most complete experience I had with this media, only Oretsuba come close.
I went through it in 4 days so I was probably not too sane while reading but damn was it good.

I love Baldr Sky too but it's not really the kind of game that soak into you like Muramasa.

All the VenusBlood titles are unconnected story/world-wise.
Anyways if you want to start the series I would say Empire is your best bet.
Empire is the best as a whole in my opinion, story/characters-wise.
Abyss offers some changes in the gameplay that make it quite different compared to the other games in the series.
Frontier, the most recent one, refine the gameplay of Empire and the upgrade is quite welcome, especially Frontier is far more challenging since Empire was far too easy.
But the story/characters aren't as strong.

All of them have some really good soundtracks that are quite underrated.

Big thanks to those who said I should save this one last. Way better than San's trainwreck and ended up being my favorite out of the three.
In addition to San's route, my general complaints would be an average OST, lack of CGs and that the writing sometimes drags on a bit with overly long descriptions of weapons, words and magic. Otherwise a good game, but not quite Asairo tier.

How hard is the Japanese in GoGoNippon? I downloaded it, and the fact that I failed to understand some of the very first Japanese sentences despite how I lived in Japan for a year (though it was five years ago) pissed me off and made me stop playing due to hating myself. I'm going to study Kanji and get back to it probably at least a few months from now; I'm going to avoid reading the English because God damn I'm not a fucking pussy.

Also, it asks you to set the exchange rate between JPY and USD right at the beginning, but it does so by asking how many USD is equal to one JPY. However, the acceptable range is 0.1 to 999.9. What's the deal? I don't think a single yen has EVER been worth as much as a tenth of a dollar.

But more importantly, how hard is the Japanese used throughout GoGoNippon?

>> No.10379574

>>10379565
I didn't think it was that difficult. They use some idioms here and there but the kanji level is nowhere as complex as harder novels.

The exchange rate has a bug, you have to input the reverse. I think. I don't know if it's been fixed yet.

>> No.10379581

>>10379574

That would make more sense; if you choose to use Euros instead of dollars, it asks you how many Yen to the Euro instead of vice-versa.

So you have to input how many Yen to the USD, even though it's asking for the opposite?

Still early in so I don't know how it scales to other charage, but I'm not sure if it can really be compared since it's really kind of unique.

Also funny as hell, and the dialogue is crude, not in a bad way, just uncensored and direct. I wish that more games were like this.

Pretty much finished with Amatsukaze now, that was one great ride. Overally good and nicely executed story with some great action in it, gameplay was fairly fun too. Machina Chronicle is also interesting setting. Heroines weren't really anything big but Akebi and Natsume really grew on me. The lolis had the best route although prefering Akebis ver. over the Sayo ver., Natsumes route was also pretty nice, Yuunagis didn't really compare to other two.

Can't forget the OST either which has some amazing tracks in it. Which makes me ask, does anyone here have the OST of both Dea Ex Machina and Amatsukaze as I can't really find working place to get them or am I stuck to just listening the rips from games?

You can always use a VM if 8 doesn't want to work.

>> No.10384008

I've had no problems with most things. The only games I've had issues with were a few games that use Wamsoft's modified Kirikiri engine, which checks the kernel version and won't let the game run if it sees Windows 8. Most of these games have patches, but some don't, notably a bunch of ALcot games.

I keep around an XP VM for stubborn games anyway, so no problem. It's not worth going back to Win7 and losing Win8's nice multi-monitor features.

One nice thing is that Win8 doesn't restrict language packs to the Ultimate Edition like 7 does, so games with aggressive region checks (e.g. Rewrite) are easier to deal with in 8.

IC is just what it is, an introduction. If you finish CC you'll end up wanting to play the final segment, Coda.

The game is mostly centered around Setsuna and Touma, but if you can't stand that then you'll be pleased to know that 2 of the routes in CC are mostly irrelevant entirely. (You could say 3 if you count normal ends as a route). However if you want Haruki to be less of a piece of shit than he is, you'd probably best put the game in your backlog because the he's outrageously hetare in all routes but like 2 or 3.

That being said I really hate drama, but WA2's characters are pretty good, Maruto's writing is equally charming as it is addictive, and, though I had anticipated that it would take me much longer, due to pretty good pacing and progression of events and wanting to see conflicts resolved I played the game in a few day straight sitting. I still like his other works (particularly Parfait and Curio) much much better, but WA2 is a completely different game (to put it into perspective, kind of loosely, imagine the lingering affection/unrequited love themes in Rikako, Kanako, and (less so) Midori's routes much more refined and extended into a full game.) Not really my cup of tea, but it's easy to recommend.

>> No.10384027

>>10383969
Game wise, little to no problems. The games that haven't worked with 8 have been the same games that I required a 2000 or XP VM to play.

However, though the compatibility is fine, I really really don't recommend windows 8. Even though you can modify it to restore most of 7s functionality and it's marginally more efficient, 7 is much more definitive, fine as it is, and entirely reliable. Unless you feel like going to the extra effort of configuring the OS with little reward, you'll be better off sticking with what you already have. That is, unless you need more than 16gb of ram, which requires 7 Pro/Ultimate, the memory limit of 8 is much cheaper than upgrading your copy of home if that's what you have.

I haven't had any problems with older vns... except for ones that didn't work right on 7 either. Some fairly recent VNs just don't run on 8 though. I have an XP vm for really old stuff anyway since there was no point in dealing with half assed or buggy support on 7 when you can load up a vm in minutes.

The only thing I really miss from 7 is the thintask hack because I like my task bar on the side and microsoft doesn't believe being able to resize your task bar to the correct size is an issue that needs fixing since vista.

Trying to read Ayakashibito, it had a Chinese translation that I could read quite easily.
I picked it up as the description suggested themes of discrimination etc, and had a sound setting for action and very serious drama.
The prologue did meet my expectations quite nicely, however, as soon as the school section started, i became quite irritated by the unnatural transition between comedy and drama, as this destroyed the atmosphere i expected. Inappropriate choice of music and dubious art quantity also doesn't help.

Harukuru is great, it has a deceiving start which may put you off but it's riddled with foreshadowing. The game is interesting to say the least even if it has some retardation here and there, quite well done.
Tenshihane: definetely worse than Asairo and itsusora, has a couple of weak routes but the themes are well done and its use of christian mythology and god is quite refreshing. It's also more accessible than the rest of Shumon's titles. Hanene is great too, but the romance in general is lacking.
Jun'ai road: didn't like it much, not going for the main heroine makes you feel like shit sometimes and the developments are pretty basic in each route, the comedy isn't very good either. Mediocre.
Hello world: really good, well done themes and setting, but playing more than one route is annoying as hell, so Chieri/Mika make for best choices unless you go the mainer/Natsumi route, but I didn't like her much anyway. Definetely my favourite from the ones I've played in that list.

You ask for a lot
Harukuru:
Sci-fi themed eroge that masquerade as a nukige. I really liked the text that felt crude in a good way, the characters are very nice and the setting/development of the plot is very competently done. Harumi's route kind of clash compared to the rest of the game but it was nice and crazy in a good way. One of the best eroge of 2012, a must read.

Kuro to Kuro to Kuro
It's a "training" eroge by Shumon, despite this and the numerous scenes, the ero is pretty poor and the scenes short.
But you obviously won't read it for this, the writing is very Shumon as expected but compared to his other games it kind of take its time to get going, but once the wall of ero start thinning you start to see a really interesting setting and story, Shumon's take on christianity.
Chisse, Aoyama's character, is a very fascinating character who is pretty different from what you'd expect from a Shumon heroine (I don't know if you can call her a heroine though), I'd say the game is worth reading just for her.

-Tenshi no Hane wo Fumanaide
Shumon for normal, at least for most of the game. Not to say this is bad though. The game is divided in 2 completely different sections, the sun and moon school.
The sun school is a bit of an Otoboku made Shumon but in retrospect it's one of the strongest part of the game, the pacing is really good.
The moon school is completely different and basically focus on a magic war, this section can be considered the main part of the game. The quality of the routes vary unfortunately but the true route that come after that ties up everything very well.
Thematically it's a bit of Kuro3 2.0. Like everything Shumon did it's definitely worth reading.

>> No.10388104

>>10388095
-Shinju no Yakata
A collaboration of Mareni (raiL-soft) and Romeo so expected it's not an easy read but the writing is very strong. Without spoiling I'd say it's the eroge version of House of Leaves with less meta, I especially liked the route of the twins that had some insane writing.
The true route wasn't too satisfying though so it falls a bit short in the end, still a really nice and different title.

-Jun'ai Road
Basically Majikoi with yankee, except the protagonist is a wuss. I'm not a big fan but if you liked Tsuyokiss you'll like it, maybe.

-Hateshinaku Aoi, Kono Sora no Shita de...
Here is one eroge I love, it's pretty much the quintessence of a rural mystery type eroge.
Hateshinaku takes place on a period of 1 year and has 5 routes, spring being the common part, there are 2 version of summer based on the heroines you pursue and then the individual routes start during autumn.
While there is no true route to tie everything up, each individual routes focus on different pieces of the puzzle so getting the full story need you to read everything.
The story/setting themselves are really strong so it's a pleasure to see everything click little by little, the pacing can be seen as a little slow at first but it fits the mood of the game and the routes themselves are pretty fascinating.
Character-wise, the protagonist is pretty typical but the main antagonist is hateable in a good way and Fumino, one of the heroine, is one of the best eroge heroine ever.
There is a bit of molestation/almost rape though and the bad ends are hardcore

-Desire
Yu-No 0.1. I'm not the biggest fan, mostly because I could see the whole plot going 10 minutes in and because the 2 protagonists are pretty disgusting but the plot itself isn't bad. The first 2 routes are completely redundant so that's very annoying but the final part was nice.

-Hello World
One of the best eroge ever.
Starting with the flaws, the game takes a while to get going, the heroines are also not very interesting (Chieri's jealous moe was cute though).
But once the game gets going it never stops, unlike some other eroge that are far too long for their own good, in HW the length is one of its strength, the experience you get from seeing the whole keep going while the situation gets worse and worse is amazing. I basically thought that the game was ending 3 times during my first route but no, it kept going and it kept getting better and better.
The protagonist is also a piece of work, a robot who tries to understand humans. He is basically the star of the game and you'll love him in the end, the side characters are also very strong unlike the heroines.
Anyways it's a must read for anyone who gets in this media in my opinion.

Hello World
An underrated VN (imo), probably due to its outdated CG looks. Well, I certainly almost gave it a miss due to the looks but a few fellow anons here gave me enough nudge to try it. Fairly good scifi sitting without overwhelming world-building info dump. The heroines are essentially useless, so just pick whoever that triggers your liking. The strength of character building of the protagonist is amazing in its own right, which contrasts with the heroines even more. When the events begin its movement it truly feels exciting. IMO out of all N+ stuff, this one is only beaten by muramasa, but YMMV.
