Weiss Schwarz thread!

What is Weiss Schwarz?
It's a trading cards' game composed of many different anime, visual novels and video games from Haruhi Suzumiya to Fate/Zero, Lucky Star to Bakemonogatari and Persona, etc... The art on the cards is usually pretty awesome.
Three starter decks have been translated in English (Disgaea, Madoka and Fate/Zero) but all cards are translated online, and usually easy to remember. Playing with the browser next to you quickly becomes natural.

Have you tried a local card shop? Weiss Schwarz are surprisingly well distributed.

You could also give the PSP game a try, it has the iDOLM@STER cards.

Vanguard is basically an easier version of this, both being made by the same company. The added mechanics make me like Weiss Schwarz better out of the two, though. There's plenty of tutorials out there, and if you can't find any, you could always download the PSP game and try the tutorial from that one.

I'd suggest reading the Wikia because I'd pretty much just copy paste it and watching a duel or two.
The main interesting "mechanic" is that the only way to play stronger cards that cost more, you need to

1) have a higher damage level (the point of the game is to deal damage to your opponent, once he reaches 4 he loses, so you have to balance dealng and getting damage) and

2) you can only play a card if its color is in your level zone. There are four colors total and usually decks have 2 or 3.

I'd suggest reading up or trying the PSP game; It's in Japanese but the tutorials make sense regardless

Yeah, as the anime and the game were designed to compliment and advertise each other, the anime is also pretty rules-tight, so you could watch that to pick up Vanguard if you want. The fact that it's also not terrible helps you pick up the game a bit faster, too.

All of that aside, there's also a Weiss Schwarz OVA from what I hear, but I haven't had the time to look into it. I hear it uses OC cards, though, some issue with using other properties in animated format compared to just using them as cards. If you can get past that, I'm sure it can't hurt to watch it in order to pick up the game a bit faster.

I play. I'm currently borrowing my friends Disgaea 4 deck as my two trial decks are not very good. I only bought a couple of boosters outside of them.He plays a blue yellow disgaea 4. I usually use my trial melty blood and he beats me everytime.

I have all three sets released in English, and I've played the PSP game.

Couldn't be assed to try and read the story, though. There's some bullshit about transferring schools to one where everyone plays WS. There you reunite with your childhood friend and other run-of-the mill things.

The partner requests during duels were kind of interesting, though sometimes they'd ask you to do dumb shit like not attack this turn despite there being no reason not to.

I have a few decks I'm cycling through. I main a standard railgun deck, but also have a FS/N deck themed around rider/saber (green/yellow). If I had someone to play with, I might be assed to finish this Guilty Crown deck, since I have several booster boxes of cards sitting around.

It usually reflects the anime it's representing. If the anime has a lot of stuff like that, the cards will try to have them. You won't see sexualized lucky star characters...

The forementioned LackyCCG plug-in is actually not that bad if you're familiar with the game itself, but it's definitely not newbie-friendly. I managed to install the plugin and everything (which was hard, so many dead links) but each player has to do every action themselves, and trust the other player to do the same right? Wannabe-Gil-deckbuilder here.

I got around to playing a few games of WS and have been doing a lot of reading about deck construction and the like.

I'm relatively sure the F/SN Gil cards won't work very well with the F/Z cards (especially Gate of Babylon, it's too overcosted and only works with F/SN Gil cards). The Lv. 2 Gil card has a nice ability. F/HA Gil-ko with Enuma Elish seems like a really good combo if I'm at a higher level and need a better Gil card. As for the F/Z Archer cards, some look kinda "meh" and some are actually quite good (especially that Lv.3, goddamn).

tl;dr: Can't make a decent mono-Gil deck, he'll have to rely on mongrels to help out. Maybe that faker and his harlot of a Master.

In trying to figure out a Gil deck, I figured I'd keep the F/SN and F/HA Gil cards and include some women and children for Lv. 0 cannon fodder. I don't have the cards on hand yet (waiting on booster boxes and single card auctions), but it may be a fun deck once I get all the cards for it.

It'll need to be refined further, especially if they release an expansion for Fate/Extra CCC.
