That said, A-1's designs look far inferior and less detailed than Tofu's CG designs, simply because of it being anime designs.

That's true. My train of thought, though, was that Gree want to encroach on DeNa's marketshare with their own iDOLM@STER IP. That way, they might directly cut into CG's profits with ML. It's basically fighting fire with fire, rather than simply trying to get more profit.
