Not really the best place to be asking this, but basically you change the value where it's supposed to be changed. For example, if for some reason it's 0000004E, it would be second to last on the 5th row. Do note that it's hexadecimal, so it goes from 0 to F, if you're having trouble finding it. Also, if you aren't sure, back up the original before saving the file and testing it out.

http://vndb.org/g

The easiest way to find more games that you'll like is to look at one you already know you like and then search for games with similar tags. You can also exclude tags that you dislike, search by language, platform, etc. Though for translations, a game is already marked for that language even if the translation is incomplete. You'll have to look at the actual game page, a blue little + in a square icon means incomplete, green means complete. You'll see what I mean.

They're not translators but fast to use dictionaries. Obviously you shouldn't completely rely on them either and even if you "only" use them to look up unknown kanji I'd still recommend taking their results with a grain of salt as they tend to fuck up spoken language or long-ass words.
Only a madman would try reading something like Oretsuba with their help.

It depends a lot on yourself. Are you going to just skim through the unknown words, only reading the spelling and use the programs as a crutch, or try to memorize new stuff as it comes along? I personally found them really helpful when starting.

There's a good reason why anon won't link any of them. It's better for your sanity, honestly. The majority of those otoge review blogs don't even throw out proper reviews, they're more like clunky summaries with perhaps a small paragraph containing their own thoughts. No analyzing involved or what you're in store for which is how reviews should be written. You'll also find that most otoge bloggers tend to use childish emoticons and honestly use the word bishie/ikemen or whatever. Of course, I'm not saying that applies to all. But most.

When they're good, they're great. I'm not going to link them here, but sometimes they can be insightful and informative. Two otoge bloggers collaborated on a podcast last year about various aspects in otoge and it was very well thought out. Made me respect them.

Most people who read otoge blogs are idiots anyway, only wanting a quick summary of things so they can beg for a translation or play with some translator. .

Depends on what you're after, if you want the fresh stuff, you'll need an access to private servers which are hard to get into. Old but rare files and things imported from public networks like Share and BT are traded on the public ones. If you have a large collection with properly named files and know how to talk Japanese people into trading with you then you could try using it, but setting this shit up is a bit of a hassle. The most popular public servers need a Japanese IP, so you'd need to use proxifier with those and set it as if you were behind firewall. My problem is that I can't talk non-retarded Japanese so if I silently enter someone's queue, he usually ignores me. I wouldn't recommend this network to the impatient because it takes a lot of time before you start a trade, not to mention complete it if your connection is slow. The whole network declined a bit in the recent years compared to the time when there used to be around 2000 people logged in on the largest servers.

By the way, the file management is complete shit because you can't add a single file (only whole folders) and if you delete a file from the list you delete it from the disk instead of deleting it from your shared files.

This is a guide to private servers but I think it applies to public ones as well:

Doing Eien no Aselia right now. The art style takes a lot of getting used to. Some of the CGs at least are pretty good, but damn the character sprites hurt to look at. Combat's pretty fun, and I like how they managed to create significant individual differences in every spirit's combat aptitude despite them having mostly the same types of skills. Such as Halion having massive HP but few defensive skills, and Nanaru's complete specialization in AoE damage.

What To Heart enjoyed and others not was the advent of the internet. Before it all you had were magazines or if you were one of the few kids who could afford a computer and had access to internet. Popularity through media.

That was precisely my point. Neither was the first to do what it did, but they were both the first to bring it to mainstream attention and set up the formula that would become the standard for years to come.

ToHeart packaged elements from earlier games together, and after it was released, it was ToHeart being copied, not those earlier games. So yes, it did pretty much define the genre.

Most people actually can tell you who Newton is. Most anime fans can tell you what Sailor moon is, but nobody mentions minky momo unless they want to be retarded about shit, which is a proper sign of influence.

I'll give you that, though that's mostly because the newer Precure stuff is also pretty shit. I still consider CCS to be basically the peak of the genre.

But this is a VN thread, so to make this post more related: are any good magical girl eroge aside from Nanatsuiro Drops?

>nobody mentions minky momo unless they want to be retarded about shit

what does this even mean

its a good cartoon (i never read the comic)

i think that anons point is that things need other things to build on top of

if were talking in terms of genre then nobody thinks sailor moon is the first magical girl show and the most overall influential magical girl show was the first 1 (i think it was some black and white cartoon and it was basically just a fluke that it happened to be a magical girl show) but the original arguement is about things causing some breakthrough in a genre

At least in DI the first route was mostly about normal people being murdered. Which was sort of awkward since there were no normal people. The KKK fight some spider grunts off screen without affecting anything so them being not represented is less irritating. But still, what is one sprite?

Not that guy, but does the order you play them in matter? vndb lists them as prequels/sequels to each other but I'm not sure if you actually have to read them in a linear order or if it's more like, say, the steampunk series where it isn't really a big deal.

This scene was terribly awkward.

For some reason, Natsume's route was horrible in general. It didn't have nearly as much humor as in the common route and it felt pretty bland.
I don't think I can go on with any of the other routes if they're this bad.

I didn't do Natsume's route so I can't compare, but Risa's route felt the opposite to me - it had just as much comedy as the common route (actually even funnier in my opinion) and basically 0 drama, so I was really surprised. I heard Sakura's was supposed to be good too.

If you really like Natsume, I think you can bear through it. It wasn't too bad in the beginning. She has some really cute moments too.
It really sucks towards the middle of the route where it becomes tedious. It's that whole "I'm not sure what I'm feeling so I'm just going to run away from you without saying anything" type of situation. It seemed out of character for her and went on for far too long, but whatever.

Is it just me or are common routes usually the best in these types of eroges? I just finished 3 heroine routes and, once they started going out, things ended up pretty damn boring. The whole final drama bit was extremely forced too and I ended up CTRL+Skipping it.

I ask because this seems to be happen rather often. Chara-ges are probably the worst offenders.

Manga is way more time consuming if you get into it. I have way more \ree time working full time than I did in college. That's not even 1 novel a weekend. Nothing can really compare to NEET mode though. 8-10 VNs a month, 100+ manga series, and jrpgs galore with time to spare?

The NEET life was great, so much free time. With work, it cuts pretty much everything down big time. My backlog of VNs/eroges have been hovering around 30 for the last 2+ years.

I also find anime to be way more time consuming then manga. I spend 30-60 minutes catching up on daily manga updates, whereas I used to spend hours watching anime.

Most shows nowadays are rather boring too, especially the adaptations which are usually either terribly done or just plain boring since you know what's going happen.
