The few that are interested in our hobbies are revered by the male nerds. Even if they don't want the male nerds, it's so easy for them to just get a normal guy, too. Oh wow. Otaku have a direct hand in the culture. The industry was CREATED by otaku. Obviously, not every otaku creates things, but they have something to add to the base. They transmit the culture from past to present at the very least. The reason why we even have figures is due to otaku and GK.

I don't consider myself otaku but I feel it's wrong that some people in this thread are obsessed with the concept of a "true fan". If someone doesn't do something or fulfil your standards then why should you have the right to say they aren't a fan?
